The Miss Universe 2025 pageant is becoming the center of global controversy after a series of contestants and national copyright organizations spoke out about suspicions of fraud and lack of transparency in the organization and announcement of results.
On her personal page with 1.4 million followers, Palestinian representative Nadeen Ayoub was one of the first to speak up. She said that in the Most Beautiful People category, she was holding the leading position with an overwhelming number of votes. However, when the contest ended and other categories were locked, this award continued to be open.
Within minutes, a contestant suddenly surged in the polls, surpassing Ayoub and pushing her down to second place. Palestinian representatives were outraged, saying this was a sign of "obvious opacity and unfairness" in the voting system.
Not only Middle Eastern contestants spoke out, the wave of criticism spread to European representatives. Miss Universe Estonia 2025 Brigitta Schaback shocked the world when she announced that she would give up her title right after the final. She said that her personal values "no longer match" with the national director who holds the copyright of Miss Universe Estonia, and affirmed that she would continue to work for women's rights independently, no longer related to the organization.
Norway's Leonora Lysglimt-Rødland also openly questioned the fairness of the competition. "I had my top 10 guessed beforehand. We were all disappointed. What's the point of competing if they already made their choices?" she wrote. This quickly drew agreement from the global fan community, who had already questioned the controversial decisions in the final night.
On November 23, Indonesian representative Sanly Liu continued to add her voice to the wave of protests. In a lengthy article, she mentioned the tears behind the scenes of many contestants who tried their best but were not recognized. Despite the disappointment, they still showed solidarity, support and comfort each other in those unforgettable moments. Sanly Liu also declared her support for composer Omar Harfouch, who left his position as a judge of Miss Universe 2025 to denounce fraud in the contest. Mr. Harfouch even asked for the crown of the new Miss Universe Fatima Bosch to be stripped.
Not only contestants, but also national copyright-owning organizations have spoken out. Lisa Lents, who led Denmark to the Miss Universe 2024 title, confirmed that this was the reason she did not renew her copyright. "This year's contest speaks for itself. I'm glad I'm no longer involved," Lents wrote.
The Miss Universe Lebanon organization announced that it was considering stopping sending representatives in the future. They affirmed that Sarah-Leena deserved to be in the Top 30 with careful preparation, but this year's contest "looked more like a staged show than a fair competition". The Miss France organization also said that it was hesitant to renew its contract because of soaring copyright costs and increasingly disappointing transparency.
According to Entrevue, the president of Miss France stressed that the issue is not just about royalties, but about respect and consistency of the brand. "If those things are no longer there, we will have to seriously consider withdrawing."
As a number of countries question the credibility of the pageant, the public is increasingly outraged by the way the Miss Universe organization is run under the leadership of Mexican businessman Raul Rocha. The outcry from contestants and national organizations suggests that Miss Universe 2025 is facing an unprecedented crisis of confidence.
