Actor Phan Van Sang - who plays Chon in "Free Bird" makes many people feel sorry for his difficult life, without a wife and children, fighting illness alone at the age of U70.
The amateur actor became famous after just one movie
After many years of ups and downs in the Southern television drama industry, many artists have become famous, including Van Sang with the character Chon in the movie Free Bird by director Quang Dai.
The character Chon was written by screenwriter Nguyen Ho, former Director of TFS Film Studio, for a disabled guy living in the same alley as his house. He said: "Seeing him asking for funding to create a program for disabled people was so miserable but I didn't have any money so I "created" a character based on his prototype in the hope of maybe becoming famous in the future. His voice will "breathe easier".
The script was sent to director Quang Dai and the search for actors was quite difficult. At that time, screenwriter Nguyen Ho suggested that the director find Phan Van Sang - Chairman of the Disabled People's Club in Phu Nhuan with the affirmation: "It will definitely be able to play".
Indeed, throughout the filming process, even though he was just a newcomer, Phan Van Sang played every moment and mood of the character very realistically. Of course, this is a great credit to director Quang Dai for "honing" him. quite difficult. The character is like the prototype of Phan Van Sang's life "translated" onto the screen. When the movie aired, he didn't expect his role to be so popular. Everyone was excited about the story of Mr. Chon, a disabled bird trapper, not knowing how his pure love affair with a village girl selling water spinach - Thuy Loan would end.
At this time, Thuy Loan was already famous as a phenomenon in the movie Dat Phuong Nam. Thanks to her charming, innocent appearance and simple acting style, she and Phan Van Sang became a beautiful couple like a fairy tale in real life.
The movie was so popular that letters from the audience filled a corner of the room, asking the director to make a second part to watch. And when the second part aired, Van Sang won the Outstanding Actor award at the 1999 National Television Film Festival, as proof of a beautiful story of a difficult life from a poor boy in a black country neighborhood.
From the birth of the film, from an amateur, Van Sang suddenly emerged as a movie star. Among hundreds of admirers, there was a female director of an export company whose family matter was unfinished, and sympathized and was willing to share with him the joys and sorrows in life. The two got together and had a happy life that lasted 3 years.
Cancer, just had surgery, still suppressing pain to film
Even though he is an amateur actor, Van Sang has also tasted bitterness on film sets. He said that during the filming of the movie Free Bird, there was a scene where Thuy Loan was worried about showing off her new shirt, causing the boat to capsize, with Van Sang playing the role of the hero saving the beauty. The film crew was very worried when filming this scene because Van Sang's legs were paralyzed. They weren't done worrying about themselves, let alone rescuing the girl to shore. But that time he did very well, the director kept praising him.
When they brought Thuy Loan ashore, people discovered that Van Sang's leg was injured and had to be taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. The film crew had to take a week off to wait for him to recover from his injury before they could continue filming.
Many years ago, Van Sang participated in the movie Fish ashore by director Truong Dung as Hai 'lie'. Having just had surgery for colon cancer, being at home was sad all the time, so when he heard the news of a movie starring Van Sang, he was as happy as if he had struck gold and immediately left.
"At that time, the wound was not completely healed, the doctor forbade me to do vigorous activities, but because I missed the filming set so much, I had to hide from everyone to go on the trip. Every time I was in pain, even though I could only take one painkiller, I wanted to be sure. eat, "play" 3 pills at once. Every day I feel bad, the filming schedule is too heavy, I risk my life to take 5-6 pills to reduce the pain and fight with each scene. At that time, I just thought it was okay. If you play, play till the end, no matter what happens in the future, you won't regret it.
This is a role for which I had to work hard for months in the river area. There was a scene where I had to fight 5-6 gangsters alone. Normal people were still tired. Not to mention, I had two disabled legs and couldn't stand anymore. But because of the role, whatever the director asked me to do, I pretended to do it very well.
I had an illness in my body but I hid it very well. I had to work hard to act in every scene, especially in action scenes, I worked very hard. Sitting in a special wheelchair designed just for me, I described the sudden impulse that lasted all day to complete the role.
As for the wheelchair racing challenge scene, if it was too easy for me in the past, when filming this movie, the incision in my body had not yet fully healed, and racing at high speed caused shock to my wound, making me feel like my body was about to explode. belly.
After completing these scenes, I saw a gloomy blackness before my eyes. The director discovered that I was too reckless and scolded me. Looking back now, I don't understand why such scenes were possible" - Van Sang recalled.
How is life now?
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, actor Phan Van Sang said that not long ago, while participating in traffic using a 3-wheeled vehicle for people with disabilities, he collided with a motorbike, falling and breaking an arm.
"At that time, my friend took me to the hospital to get a cast. Now, the cast has been removed, but I'm still in the hospital doing physical therapy. I see that the person who caused my accident is also in a difficult situation. Poor guy, so I didn't ask to take responsibility, but he also sent me 3 million VND," he said.
The actor said that even though he had both legs disabled since childhood, he was independent and could do everything himself. Injuring his hand made the actor's daily activities inconvenient. Therefore, during the past few days in the hospital, he had to hire a caregiver at a cost of 600,000 VND/day.
Actor Phan Van Sang also admitted that, due to his lonely and poor circumstances, when he encountered an accident, he had to "make a name for himself" and borrow money from friends to make ends meet. "I asked friends around me to help me pay for medical treatment recently. I'm also in a lot of debt in my life, but who can I complain to?", he said.
"In 2011, while filming the movie Fish ashore, I discovered colon cancer so I had surgery. However, I still tried to complete the movie. To date, I have acted in 8 movies. Over the years, I have not even participating in movies because there are no suitable roles or scripts," the actor added.
