After a lifetime of talent devoted to the audience and the stage, when she died, artist Ngoc Huong had nothing left. Perhaps, the golden age of her career will forever be a halo that makes those who come after her admire and appreciate.
Glorious time
Artist Ngoc Huong was born in 1942 and is a child of a opera family. She stepped onto the stage very early, when she was just a 10-year-old girl. Being a child of good family, right from her first role, Ngoc Huong shined. Her sweet voice like sugarcane and excellent acting ability have helped little Ngoc Huong be loved by the audience.
Sharing about coming to the stage at a relatively young age, artist Ngoc Huong confided that because she was too poor, her parents decided to guide their children to learn the Cai Luong profession. At that time, her four siblings were able to study Vong Co singing and dancing together systematically. Born into a family with an artistic tradition and well-trained by her parents, Ngoc Huong and her siblings are all famous artists of the cai luong stage.
In the 1960s, artist Ngoc Huong was a famous actress of the same age as artists Ut Bach Lan, Thanh Nga... She won the Thanh Tam award in 1962 with artist Anh Hong. At that time, Ngoc Huong was a reformed actress, singing and acting gently. Ngoc Huong and artist Thanh Hai - the king of Tao Dan - were the brightest couple in the 1960s in the Kim Chuong reform troupe.
Artist Kim Giac spoke proudly about his younger sister: "Thanks to her smooth and intelligent temperament, Ngoc Huong was invited by Nhan (Thanh Huong troupe) to play child actress roles. Huong sings very well, fans ranked her long waiting lines after each performance. After getting married, Huong helped her husband manage the theater group while he participated in the revolution. This is something that I and the artists appreciate. In addition to talent, Ngoc Huong is also a good person. Water, becoming a fulcrum for the troupe and composer Thu An. It was a great and silent sacrifice."
When talking about artist Ngoc Huong, people will immediately remember the role of actress Oanh Kieu in the reformed play Ganh Grass Han River. Her role left a deep impression in the hearts of the audience. In the early 1980s, this role helped Ngoc Huong become an artist that many people love. Oanh Kieu's performance class took a tree branch and whipped the villain's back, surrendered, followed the enemy, and then sang the song Ly Horse Black by artist Ngoc Huong, which came to life, and that action was imitated by many audiences.
Although artist Ngoc Huong has built for herself an illustrious career with highly appreciated roles, in her "twilight years", Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huong faces poverty and persistent illness.
Being poor and suffering from serious illness
When Cai Luong gradually declined, author Thu An fell ill, and all the money and possessions he had saved were abandoned. From a famous theater troupe, artist Ngoc Huong's family fell into debt.
At that time, she and her husband had to struggle to maintain a living. All year long, the singing group only "lives" for a few seasons of worshiping at temples and communal houses. After each such season, the money earned was only enough to buy rice and the whole family had to live in the basement of Xuan Canh theater (Ben Tre). Things became more difficult when her husband got sick. His medical treatment costs sometimes reached 2 million VND/day. It was so difficult that she had to mortgage her house to get money to cover the expenses.
However, despite dedicated treatment, he could not survive. Because she had no money to pay, her house was confiscated by the bank for sale, so artist Ngoc Huong had to rent a house with her two sons' family. At her advanced age and poor health, she still sings ancient songs at artists' shops to receive small tips from customers every night to help her children pay for the market.
In 2005, her husband - author Thu An - passed away, leaving behind a huge legacy of works with more than 150 reformed scripts, including many famous works such as: Afternoon Sun on the Dich River, Two Ways of Separation , Han River grass burden, Hoa Lu citadel command drum, Gunfire at midnight, Airport fire... not to mention thousands of Vong Co songs. However, every once in a while, a center or unit comes to buy the copyright to rebuild. The modest amount of royalties is not enough to help the late author Thu An's wife and children overcome poverty.
Talking about the profession of "singing singer", Meritorious Artist Ngoc Huong once choked up mentioning the verse: "Closing the curtain of fame and fame/Someone returns to wash away all sadness/Someone goes to take off his shirt and wipe off his makeup/Returning both honor and death. school". These verses seem to have really entered her life.
In her twilight years, artist Ngoc Huong not only struggled with a difficult life but also had to fight illness. Her illness made it difficult for her to walk and walk. She could not stand on stage to sing, so she only stayed at her daughter-in-law's house and shop. For an artist who has been attached to the stage almost all his life but cannot bring his singing to the audience, nothing could be sadder.
Artist Ngoc Huong said, life is difficult because food, clothes, and money are nothing. What makes her miserable is that the artistic fire is burning brightly but she cannot stand on stage to meet the audience.
On the evening of November 30, 2017, the female artist passed away at the age of 75 after struggling with liver cancer. In the morning of the same day, her daughter-in-law took her to the hospital in a healthy and alert state, but in the evening her health suddenly deteriorated. She fell into a coma and died at the hospital.
