People's Artist The Anh, whose real name is Nguyen The Anh, was born on April 3, 1938 in Xuan Phuong commune, Tu Liem district, Hanoi. He is the 3rd child in a well-to-do family, his mother is a small businessman, and his father is a well-educated man. When The Anh was 3 years old, his father was given a scholarship to study medicine in France. His mother had to raise his two brothers alone (the second brother died early). Later, People's Artist The Anh was able to contact his father, but until his father's death, the two still did not see each other.
Growing up, The Anh attended Lycée Albert Sarraut, Khai Thanh Private School, Minh Tan, and Hoang Huu Nam. After graduating from high school, he worked at the Military High School for 2 years. In 1961, he was admitted to the Faculty of Mathematics, Hanoi National University of Education. Only 4 months into the school, he enrolled and passed the acting class of the School of Dramatic Art. Graduating with honors from the first regular theater actor course in 1964 with the role of an American officer trapped in a bunker in the play Black Night (in the trilogy of short plays Half a Country in the Night by author Ngo Y Linh), The Anh returned to work at the Central Theater Company.
In 1964, when cinematographer Nguyen Dang Bay and director Huy Thanh were looking for a new actor to play the role of Lieutenant Phuong in the plastic film Floating Wind (based on the script of the same name by Dao Hong Cam), The Anh was the 13th person to audition and was selected. Even in this first role, he made a mark in his acting career when he successfully portrayed a young lieutenant in the army of the Republic of Vietnam. In addition, the handsome appearance at that time helped the late artist The Anh score absolutely in the hearts of the audience. Even the image of lieutenant Phuong became the standard for evaluating the beauty of Vietnamese men in the 1960s.

With a handsome face plus a bit of romance, People's Artist The Anh was once considered a "prince" in Vietnamese cinematic art years ago. Therefore, directors often assign him roles related to passionate, passionate, intense love stories.
Regarding family life, he married his wife, actress Thu Hang. The Anh and his wife have known each other since they were at the same School of Dramatic Art (now Hanoi University of Theater and Cinema). At that time, she was a beauty queen, and he was the outstanding male student of the first regular stage actor course in Hanoi. Falling in love with a talented young man with a handsome face and a crooked smile, she accepted his confession. In 1966, after The Anh acted in his first film Floating Wind , they got married and had two sons. The Anh named two children - Phuong and Duy - after the two main characters in The Wind (1966) and First Love (1977) to celebrate the milestones in his acting journey. The Anh's two sons did not grow up following his father's footsteps. The eldest son The Phuong once hit the acting career when filming the movie Life with our name (1992). Later, he worked in the aviation industry. The Duy's second son currently works in the banking industry and resides in France.
The wife confided that in old age, The Anh suffered from Alzheimer's disease, so he sometimes remembered and forgot, but still recognized his children and colleagues. Although his body was difficult to move due to the effects of the stroke, he still smiled. At the end of his life, The Anh did not have any great wishes because he had achieved many achievements in movies and plays. Sometimes, confiding in her on his hospital bed, he cherishes a mini-museum displaying the artifacts he has collected during his half-century career. At home, he keeps hundreds of movie posters, machinery, props... No matter how much his pension, he pours into buying movie-related souvenirs.
He died at 5:30 am on September 29, 2019 at Thong Nhat Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City from a heart attack, at the age of 81. The departure of People's Artist The Anh has left many regrets for generations of artists, theater and film actors of the country.
