After more than a decade of fame when he became the first man in the world to get pregnant, Thomas Beatie broke up with his ex-wife, gave birth to 3 children and now has a home with his new wife.
Who is Thomas Beatie?
Thomas Beatie, born January 20, 1974 in Honolulu, Hawaii, is known for his unique personal journey related to gender identity and parenthood. Assigned female at birth, Beatie identified as male from a very young age and faced many challenges due to his conservative upbringing and community.
Ultimately, he underwent female-to-male gender reassignment surgery and legally changed his gender to male. However, he chose to retain his female reproductive organs, later making headlines with his pregnancy.
Beatie stated: "I think many people still think that if you want to be transgender, you must completely remove your reproductive organs and not have children. There needs to be discussions about the fertility of transgender people." "They have the right to be happy, have a family and be respected."
The world's first pregnant man
Beatie attracted significant media attention when he became the first legally recognized transgender man to give birth. His first pregnancy was in 2008, followed by two more pregnancies in the following years.
These pregnancies are carried out through artificial insemination using donor sperm. He and his first wife, Nancy, had been trying to conceive for several years using artificial insemination. But Nancy had a hysterectomy so they couldn't have children.
After Thomas' first child, Susan, was born in 2008, he continued to expand the family. This man gave birth to two more children with Nancy. However, their relationship faced many challenges and the couple broke up in 2012.
In 2016, Beatie entered his second marriage with Amber Beatie. Interestingly, Amber previously worked at the day care center where Thomas' children attended school. The couple welcomed a baby together in 2018, with Amber giving birth.
Challenges when men are pregnant
As the world's first pregnant man, Thomas Beatie faced countless challenges. He received hate letters, death threats, and his family was under intense media scrutiny.
Beatie also had difficulty finding health care providers willing to treat him simply because he was transgender. Despite these challenges, Beatie was determined to carry her baby to term. "Everything was like a whirlwind but I still have no regrets," he said.
Thomas Beatie's pregnancy sparked a heated debate about the definition of parenthood and the role of gender in parenting. Many people were shocked and confused by the idea of a man holding a child, while others saw it as a beautiful example of love and determination.
Some religious groups and conservative individuals condemned Beatie's pregnancy, saying it went against the natural order. However, many LGBTQ activists and advocates have praised Beatie as a pioneer and champion of transgender rights.
Additionally, Beatie acknowledged that even as public perception of his personal experience has changed, there is still more work to be done to support transgender people who wish to start a family. Those include more training among health care providers, equitable access to fertility treatments, and maternity leave.
