Musician Lu Nhat Vu's full name is Le Van Gat, born in 1936 in Thu Dau Mot, Binh Duong. Musician Lu Nhat Vu was awarded the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2001.
Musician Lu Nhat Vu's composing career has many famous songs such as "Afternoon on Ban Meo", "Sai Gon girl goes to load ammunition", "Please rest assured, mother", "Southern land song"... And musician Lu Nhat Vu's loving heart has also been through many storms before finding peace with a "Ca Mau girl" as he calls her.
"Ca Mau Lady" is poet Le Giang, 6 years older than musician Lu Nhat Vu. Since 1945, poet Le Giang participated in the resistance war in her hometown of Ca Mau, then gathered in the North to study, and returned to the Southern Central Bureau Base in 1963.
When she met musician Lu Nhat Vu at the Southern Central Bureau Base, poet Le Giang already had a husband and two children. However, the emotional vibration and spiritual empathy have kept them together for more than half a century.
Poet Le Giang not only wrote lyrics for many famous songs by musician Lu Nhat Vu, but also wrote a poem "I'm still waiting for you to come back" dedicated to the fateful man in her life: "Years and months of standing in the rain and forest / Day and night buried in the mountain mist / I'm still waiting, still waiting / You will come back to me / Waiting for a moment of peace / Waiting for the bombs to stop / To sit next to you / To love, to be angry / To be resentful, to be jealous / To be happy and sad / To be husband and wife".
Musician Lu Nhat Vu revealed that before finding peace with "Ca Mau girl", he had gone through 3 failed love affairs during the days of regrouping to the North.
When he first entered the music industry, musician Lu Nhat Vu had the pen name Lu Phong. However, his first love affair with a girl named Vu made him change his pen name to Lu Nhat Vu, meaning that Lu Phong only loved the beautiful Vu. Ironically, the love affair ended and Lu Nhat Vu was jokingly called Lu Nhat Vu by his colleagues.
The second love affair of musician Lu Nhat Vu took place during the period when he wrote the song "Afternoon on Ban Meo" which won second prize in the songwriting contest with the theme "Gio Dai Phong - Song Duyen Hai - Co Ba Nhat". Unfortunately, the wedding plan went up in smoke.
The third love of musician Lu Nhat Vu was quite romantic. That was the time when he wrote the song "Saigon Girl Carrying Ammunition", and that girl, for sensitive reasons, asked to be called HT for short. After a long time meeting HT, musician Lu Nhat Vu immediately showed off his achievements to the beauty. While cycling parallel to HT, musician Lu Nhat Vu sang loudly "Sisters, each shell here carries my heart, together with you we contribute fire to destroy the enemy. Even if bombs fall, even if there are many police posts, I hope you guys can rest assured, each shell reaches my hand...". After listening, HT commented: "It's good, but it sounds so sad" which made musician Lu Nhat Vu feel offended about his hoarse voice!
However, that "unforgettable love story" also ended, because HT quietly married into another man's family. Pained and humiliated, musician Lu Nhat Vu concluded: "Decades later, the people involved still do not understand the reason why this love did not lead to marriage. In life, I often encounter twisted, perverse love stories: if there is fate, there is no destiny, and if there is destiny, there is no fate."
In 1970, musician Lu Nhat Vu crossed Truong Son to fight in the South. And musician Lu Nhat Vu and poet Le Giang met by chance. Originally trained as a civilian doctor, poet Le Giang took care of musician Lu Nhat Vu through malaria at the Southern Central Bureau Base. A late but lasting fate, a connection that is still faithful to this day.
Musician Lu Nhat Vu and poet Le Giang are two perfect pieces, although both have experienced many ups and downs. Their "unforgettable love story" has brought to the public popular songs such as "Please rest assured, mother" or "Song of the Southern Land". And together they have created valuable musical research works such as "Ho trong dan ca nguoi Viet", "Hat ru Viet Nam", "300 melodies of Southern folk songs"...
How is life now?
On her personal Facebook page, rock queen Ngoc Anh said that musician Lu Nhat Vu's health is very weak.
Accordingly, on the afternoon of October 13, Ngoc Anh went to People's Hospital 115 to visit musician Lu Nhat Vu. He is receiving special care in the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department of this hospital.
According to the female singer, although musician Lu Nhat Vu could not speak, he was still conscious and alert. When he heard Ngoc Anh came to visit, he smiled and nodded, signaling for his caregiver to get water and a chair for the female singer.
Ngoc Anh wrote: "I love you so much! Dad can't speak, but when he hears "I'm Ngoc Anh, Dad", he smiles happily, holds my hand tightly, and never lets go. I played the song "The Wife Eats Out" for him, he smiled, nodded, and signaled for her to take care of him, meaning "get him water to drink, get him a chair to sit on".
Musician Lu Nhat Vu was hospitalized in critical condition, on a ventilator on September 18, and has been under observation since then. Many artists are concerned about poet Le Giang because he and his wife are living alone in old age, with no one to take care of them.
On March 14, 2024, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen was awarded the 75-year Party membership badge to poet Le Giang and the 45-year Party membership badge to musician Lu Nhat Vu at his home in Thu Dau Mot city, Binh Duong province.
