With an excellent mountain climbing journey, the male student of Quoc Hoc Hue High School - Vo Quang Phu Duc has become the new Champion of the Olympia 2024 competition with a total score of 220 points.

Right from the first round "Start", Phu Duc impressed the audience by scoring 60 points. In the second round "Overcoming obstacles", he continued to surprise the entire audience by correctly answering the keyword "Net-zero" right after the first question was announced and even before the answer was announced, there were no hints. This is a rare occurrence in the program.

According to the explanation of a male student from Quoc Hoc Hue in the program: "Net-zero is the term and also Vietnam's goal to have zero net emissions by 2050."

Specifically, net-zero (or zero net emissions) is the goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with the remaining emissions being reabsorbed from the atmosphere by forests and oceans.

The world needs to reach net-zero by 2050 to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for countries like Vietnam to restructure their economies in a sustainable way, changing their mindset to move towards net-zero emissions.

At the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), Vietnam and nearly 150 countries pledged to bring net emissions to "zero" by 2050; along with more than 100 countries participating in the commitment to reduce global methane emissions by 2030 compared to 2010; along with 141 countries participating in the Glasgow Declaration of Leaders on Forests and Land Use and along with nearly 50 countries participating in the global declaration on converting coal power to clean energy.

According to the Natural Resources and Environment newspaper, to move towards a zero net emission roadmap, renewable energy including solar power, wind power and other sources need to be developed. However, the development of renewable energy needs to go hand in hand with energy storage solutions, which is one of the keys to the success of wind power and solar power for Vietnam, when the proportion of renewable energy integration into the power system is increasingly high.

Currently, the trend of energy transition is very clear, especially in the three fields of transportation, civil and manufacturing. In that picture, green hydrogen fuel is starting to emerge as a potential solution because it not only meets the "clean" condition of low GHG emissions, but also has abundant reserves, is easy to transport, and can be converted to other forms of energy. According to experts, transportation will be the field with the strongest conversion rate to green hydrogen fuel. Electric vehicles are also the right direction for the transportation sector.

Vietnam submitted the updated NDC to the UNFCCC Secretariat in September 2020, approved the National Green Growth Strategy, Power Plan 8 is in the consultation phase for completion, and the National Climate Change Strategy is also in the development phase. To achieve the goal of net zero emissions, it is necessary to review, update and adjust strategies and plans. At the same time, it is necessary to focus on mechanisms to facilitate attracting capital from the Green Climate Fund to support the implementation of net zero emissions in Vietnam. In addition, it is necessary to promote the carbon market and policy mechanisms on green finance, circular economy, etc.
