Shark Jaw Building, the name implies the 6-story concrete block built in steps, occupying the space of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, spoiling the landscape of Hoan Kiem Lake area.
The first sketch of the building was a curved line like rising smoke to "respond" to the cylindrical block of Hang Dau water tower, suitable for the shape of Hoan Kiem Lake and not too ostentatious towards Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc square. The design was chosen and the investor agreed to build it.
In 1993, when the construction was almost finished, Mr. Van went to Nghe An for work. When he returned to Hanoi, he saw the building covered with pineapple fabric, with many places being expanded and uneven. He said he sat down and cried because he was upset, "not understanding why people treated an architectural work like that." Later, he learned that the investor had asked someone else to change the design without asking his opinion.
A wave of criticism erupted when the building was painted black, and the public called it "Shark Jaws". The investor invited Mr. Van to deal with the consequences. The architect tried to be patient, not asking to demolish and rebuild according to the original design, but to adjust it neatly, painting it white as it is today.
After more than three decades, "Shark Jaws" is still criticized for its bad design, but it is very attractive to tourists, especially young people and foreign visitors. The rental price here is very expensive. According to statistics from real estate services firm Avison Young, the asking rental price on the ground floor of the building ranges from 150-200 USD (3.8-5.1 million VND) per square meter. The rental price gradually decreases from the second floor onwards but is not less than 100 USD per square meter.
In order to renovate the Hoan Kiem Lake space, in early March, the Hanoi People's Committee agreed with the proposal of the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee to demolish the "Shark Jaw" building, build underground space in the existing square area and expanded space. The underground area has about 3 basements with expected functions such as cultural space, commercial space, parking lot...
