Lil Shady is known as one of the first rappers, famous in the underground scene. After disappearing for personal reasons, he returned but his appeal has significantly decreased, and his fan base is no longer the same as before.
Lil Shady's real name is Nguyen Minh Duc, born in 1989 in Yen Bai, but moved to Hanoi after deciding to pursue a long-term career in music. Since 2005, 2006, the name Minh Duc has been noticed by many people thanks to his heart-touching covers.
When he first entered the underground world, with the stage name Lil Shady, the 8x guy soon showed his outstanding talent and worked actively in GVR Production (Genius Viet Rap). He was also one of the first members of the rap community that gathered prominent names: Phuong CD, First Love aka FL, Andree, Linh Lam, DSK...
After a while, Lil Shady decided to leave the group and become the main rapper of the KsHomie community, working with rapper Kyo. In the mid-2000s, specifically 2017, the duo Lil Shady - Kyo continuously "caused a fever" when releasing many popular hits such as: Let's go, Self-perfection, Tomorrow, Color of life, Mama my angel...
Lil Shady's music products are mostly related to daily life and social topics, so they often attract attention from the audience. Rap enthusiasts commented that although he is not good at playing skills, he has a lyrical voice that is easy to listen to and touches the heart. He is even known as a legend of Vietnamese rap with the largest fan base in more than 10 years of underground activities.
After a period of working in the underground scene, Lil Shady suddenly paused his career for personal reasons. In 2013, the male rapper returned with a series of new projects in collaboration with Khanh Won and began to step into the mainstream (roughly understood as a popular singer).
However, Lil Shady's appeal is no longer what it used to be. Because, the Vpop market in 2013 gave way to the ballad genre, music products influenced by Korea, USUK. The reputation of the senior, the "legend" of the Vietnamese rap village could not help the 8x Yen Bai to rise up to become a popular singer.
In 2018, Lil Shady collaborated with Zenky and Binh Gold to release the song "102Hater". But just a few hours after posting, the IKONIC community spoke up to accuse the trio of blatantly plagiarizing "Be I" - the hit song that BI - IKON's leader brought to the stage of "Show Me The Mone.y" season 3.
Because they think that "102Hater" is not only similar to "Be I" in the beat but even the flow is copied completely. Not stopping at accusing, they also asked YG Entertainment to take legal action to protect the music products of their "chickens".
As for Lil Shady, after being criticized, the male rapper removed "102Hater" from his YouTube channel. In the following years, he escaped the "plagiarism" label and made an impression when releasing a number of other music products such as "Gầu Mèo" or " Ãng Bà Già Tao Lo Het".
In August 2020, Lil Shady was announced as a judge on the show "King of Rap". The male rapper reunited with names known as "Vietnamese rap legends" such as Bigdaddy, Dat Manic and LK. Through the first episodes, the 8x Yen Bai was commented to be quite obscure compared to his colleagues who worked hard in the profession.
After that, Lil Shady gradually showed his expertise through in-depth comments. Not only that, the male rapper was also considered the judge who gave the most advice and encouragement to the contestants. However, after the show, he continued to struggle to find a place in the music industry.
Working mainly in the underground scene made Lil Shady's already difficult path to the mainstream market even more difficult. However, the 8x Yen Bai did not give up. In 2021, he released the songs "Nho nha" (featuring K-ICM) and "Co chnh anh ta khong toi" (featuring Ogenus), but both failed to make a splash in the music market.
In 2022, the incident occurred when Lil Shady announced that his personal channel had been "deactivated" by YouTube on August 4, through his official fanpage. The video sharing platform stated that the reason was because the account posted content that violated community standards.
Lil Shady shared with Zing that his personal channel was hacked and had the right to post videos before. The appearance of videos containing infringing content was not caused by rapper 1989. After being warned many times by YouTube, the channel was officially deleted.
After nearly a year, in 2023, Lil Shady returned with "Summer fruit" in collaboration with Long Mong Ga, Pjnboys and Huynh James. 1 month later, the male rapper suddenly posted on his personal YouTube channel the teaser MV "Biet Thu Alone". This is the second product marking his return to the Vietnamese HipHop race with Long Mong Ga.
Until recently, specifically on the evening of November 10, Lil Shady released the MV "On the Water" with a series of images of "partying" on a yacht, driving a supercar to show off his wealth. After only 1 day of posting, the MV received more than 330 thousand views and thousands of comments.
In the rap, Lil Shady directly mentioned B Ray's name, loudly criticizing the past statements of the owner of the hit "Con Trai Cung". Not only that, this guy also criticized Rap Viet fans with extremely vulgar words, and at the same time put a series of photos of the youngest coach of the show in the MV.
Despite the hard work, Lil Shady's "On the Water" was not highly appreciated, even ridiculed by rap fans for its shallow lyrics. Not to mention, combining flexing himself with dragging in his opponent's old drama in a song made it even worse and lacking in scope.
In addition, the male rapper did not add any valuable "facts" that would surprise the listeners. Instead, he just repeated the story that already had an ending. His word choice and punchline were also considered to lack "damage", and his music and images were both outdated and old.
On forums, rap fans were not "convinced" by Lil Shady's "diss rap" and expressed that with the "level" of a big brother, they wanted more. Some people even left sarcastic comments, wondering if they were afraid of B Ray's retaliation in the past, so they "diss" him now.
