It's been more than a year since her acting debut, but the role of Dyanne ( Jennie) in HBO's The Idol series is still being constantly "dissected" by the media. The series also brings together a cast of "top stars" such as The Weeknd, Lily Rose-Depp and The Weeknd.
Recently, when she became the cover girl of Harper's Bazaar USA magazine, October 2024 issue, Jennie (BLACKPINK) shared her thoughts about her career and personal life. However, some of her interview answers made the audience confused, fearing that Jennie implied that someone was manipulating and harming her.
Specifically, Jennie talked about her first foray into film with the role of Dyanne in the movie The Idol. This movie exposes the dark side of showbiz, where powerful directors and producers dominate a group of ambitious artists. Jennie said: "Dyanne and I have a lot of connections. We're very similar. Wanting to become a pop superstar is something I can easily embody." The script also appealed to Jennie: "There's the idea of a bad guy appearing and trying to manipulate, I've lived in that world all my life."
Jennie also expressed that she was experiencing physical and mental difficulties, after many years of constantly performing and participating in events, losing her privacy: "I thought I couldn't take it anymore". When talking about her free time, the female idol confessed: "I rarely see my friends because I'm constantly working or too tired. So when I have free time, being 28-year-old Jennie is the best thing I can wish for".
BLACKPINK member also confided that her true self is very different from her public image. When asked about how to adjust between these two extremes, Jennie said: "I always wonder that too. What's wrong with me? I spent 6 years as a trainee. During that time, I was too focused on becoming a performer. I didn't really understand what it meant to be an artist."
Jennie's answers have left fans confused and worried. Many fans believe that the female idol is sending an SOS signal, hinting that someone is manipulating and harming her, and that she is having physical and mental difficulties. However, others believe that there are many other funny moments in the interview, and that Jennie's openness in sharing her difficulties is better than hiding them from fans.
Previously, when she participated in the movie The Idol, it seemed like it would be a good stepping stone for Jennie to enter Hollywood, but the movie made her sink into scandal. Jennie became the target of criticism, especially in Asia. The rapper's overly sexy scenes flooded social networks, considered a "stain" that tarnished the feminist image that BLACKPINK built.
The Idol is set in the music industry, focusing on the complex relationship between a modern-day cult leader (The Weeknd) and a rising pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp).
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 and officially aired a month later. The film only lasted 5 episodes but caused a lot of controversy because it was filled with vulgar and unnecessary scenes. International media bluntly criticized The Idol as a trashy film.
Despite being heavily promoted, the role of Dyanne had a pitiful amount of screen time, only a few minutes. In the first 3 episodes, Jennie caused a lot of controversy because of her offensive choreography, "cool" outfits, and some meaningless lines. In episode 4, she received good reviews for her acting from the audience. In the last episode, she only appeared for a little over a minute.
Korean and world media believe that Jennie's presence in the film is only to attract viewers, and the character she plays has almost no impact on the plot.
In fact, the production teamâs approach worked. The Idol attracted 913,000 viewers worldwide on its first day, making it HBOâs most-watched show. It also topped the streaming drama charts for engagement, outperforming shows on established platforms like Netflix and NBC.
In addition, according to Television Stats, The Idol also surpassed other hit dramas The Last of Us and Wednesday to take the No. 1 spot in online interaction scores for TV shows since January 2022 for more than 30 consecutive days thanks to Jennie's popularity.
