2024 was supposed to be an explosive year as it marked a decade since the digital dinosaur Zico's solo debut. He paved the way for his 10th anniversary album with a "shocking" collaboration with Blackpink member Jennie earlier this year.
The interaction between two kpop idols Jennie and Zico went viral across Asia. The image of the male rapper intimately "putting his arm around the female idol's shoulder" was shared by fans, helping the SPOT! project to somewhat increase its effect of conquering the charts.
Zico thought that success would continue, but instead... drama came to him. Misfortune began to surround Zico when the Burning Sun scandal was exposed again through a BBC documentary. The male rapper was "called out" because of his close relationship with the "ringleader" Jung Joon Young. After a few months of silence, the owner of the hit SPOT! continued to be involved in scandals. This time, he was dragged into the media crisis of Korea's number 1 entertainment group - HYBE.
These days, HYBE is the "number 1 enemy of Kpop" because 2000 pages of internal reports were released to the media. The group collected unfavorable information and made negative analysis about a series of rival companies' groups and their own artists. The document "badmouthing" Kpop was strongly condemned by the public, forcing HYBE to apologize shamefully at noon on October 29. Despite the official statement, the anger of fandoms has not been extinguished.
Bang Si Hyuk was named as the person who allowed this internal document to circulate among the "upper echelons" of HYBE management officials. On the morning of October 30, Korean media revealed that Zico was added by Bang Si Hyuk to the list of people sharing this "bad-mouthing" email of Kpop.
Specifically, according to email records obtained by the Hankyoreh news site, Zico was not initially on the list of internal document sharing. A music industry official said that HYBE did not share the report with Zico because the rapper himself was an artist, and the group was afraid that Zico would feel uncomfortable.
However, on January 6, 2022, Bang Si Hyuk requested: "Please add Zico to the document sharing list". The recipients of the document included Kim Joo Young - the current CEO of ADOR and the HR director at that time. This information once again dragged Zico into the storm. The fandoms of the groups under HYBE are currently very worried about the situation of their idols, after seeing BTS and SEVENTEEN - the two most famous boy groups of the group being exploited and treated badly.
Zico founded KOZ Entertainment in 2018, which was acquired by HYBE in November 2020. Zico is currently sponsoring the boy group BOYNEXTDOOR. Zico's inclusion in the list of receiving "bad-mouthing" documents has caused many netizens to start criticizing Zico and worrying about the future of BOYNEXTDOOR.
Not letting the controversy go too far, on the afternoon of October 30, Zico officially spoke up about the issue related to HYBE's internal report. On Instagram, Zico affirmed that he had never seen/read this document. Zico asked KOZ Entertainment to check and confirm this.
Original text of Zico's statement:
"What's going on... After reading today's article, I thought I should speak up and clarify. I have never seen that document, nor have I opened the email myself or looked at any of the attachments. The additional information about the recipient is also the first time I've learned about it through today's article.
I was worried that just explaining like this might cause more misunderstandings, so before making an official statement, I asked KOZ Entertainment to check and confirm that I had never opened or checked that document and email.
Hope those who are worried will rest assured, and wish everyone a peaceful day."
When Zico got into trouble, Jennie was also implicated. She was said to not know how to choose her friends and partners.
