Jennie recently released her single Mantra. The singer has been actively promoting her new song in various ways. Along with that, she has also appeared on music shows in Korea, performing her song.
Jennie (BLACKPINK) has just returned to the music scene in October with the English single Mantra. Jennie once again affirmed her status as "Korea's No. 1 it girl" when Mantra immediately topped many domestic and international music charts. Unlike Lisa who only conquered the international market, Jennie promoted in Korea while also reaching out globally.
The song Mantra is praised by music fans for its captivating, catchy melody and unique musical color "branded" by Jennie. The song carries a message that encourages listeners to confidently shine in their own unique way. In addition, the luxurious and smooth visuals clearly depict the image of a confident and independent "pretty girl" that Jennie is aiming for. The MV is like a real fashion catalog, with luxurious outfits and billion-dollar supercars.
In Korea, Mantra, although an English song, is currently ranked second only to Rosé on the iChart charts, holding a position in the top #5 of MelOn for 2 weeks of release. Jennie also successfully brought home the first music trophy for Mantra on M! Countdown.
However, Mantra's domestic performance is facing a major obstacle when it was banned from KBS because of an inappropriate word in the lyrics. In addition, Jennie also lost the weekly trophy because Mantra was ranked 19th.
Before MBC's Music Core aired on October 19, netizens predicted that Jennie's Mantra, aespa's Karina's Up, and QWER's My Name Is Malgeum would be the three nominated songs. A popular music show score analysis account shared the scores before the show, showing that the top three songs had a large gap in points compared to the songs that came after.
However, when the show aired, Jennie's Mantra was eliminated from the top 3 nominees for the weekly trophy. Instead of Jennie, the boy group AB6IX was nominated and in the end, Karina was the winner.
Many fans felt frustrated after voting for the song but it all went down the drain because it wasn't nominated. Jennie even performed on Music Core. Fans felt that the station suddenly took away the right to receive the trophy.
Jennie's fans pointed out the discrimination surrounding the song Mantra being deducted all the trophy points because of a sensitive word. Meanwhile, the boy group AB6IX with the song NVKED, both the name and lyrics contain sensitive content, did not encounter the same problem. Fans asserted that this is discrimination, the station is "discriminating against women, double standards".
Regarding Jennie's song being banned from KBS, the reason is because the lyrics mention the brand "In-N-Out". This violates the review regulations, leading to Jennie not being able to promote the song or win weekly trophies on the station's Music Bank program.
However, KBS also said that this is not a permanent ban. The station can reconsider broadcasting if the problematic parts are edited or removed. This is not the first time Jennie has been banned. When promoting with BLACKPINK, a series of global hits such as Kill This Love, Pink Venom, Shut Down,... were also banned for the same reason.
International fans say the reason Jennie's song was banned is "silly" and overly harsh. However, Korean audiences argue that following the law is a basic duty. National broadcasters generally do not allow blatant brand advertising on air.
Before this scandal broke out, Jennie's comeback was controversial as the lyrics were suspected of "promoting a luxurious lifestyle". However, Jennie did not care about the surrounding controversies. She stuck to her image as a confident, beautiful, upper-class girl in this comeback. Jennie was also not afraid to experiment with light platinum hair, bold makeup, and bold cut-out outfits that showed off her curves.
This helps the MV Mantra to express its message clearly through the way Jennie builds her image. Putting aside her Kpop idol image, Jennie is now liberal, "yolo" and not afraid to try what she wants.
