Since her debut with Blackpink, Jennie has always shown positive energy and vitality. However, in a recent interview, the female idol attracted attention when revealing her true self.
On October 15, WIRED released an interview with Blackpink's Jennie on their YouTube channel. The interview was conducted in a Q&A format, in which Jennie answered questions based on popular Google search terms about the female idol.
When asked about her true personality, Jennie described herself as "very shy" and "the quietest" when she's with her friends. The singer explained her contrast to her cheerful, energetic image: "But the person you see on stage is very different from that person. I hope we can understand each other better."
Jennie also recalled her teenage years when she lived in New Zealand from the age of 9 to 14: "I used to have a very strong accent, but now it's completely gone. I feel sad because people don't know I lived in New Zealand." She excitedly mentioned her favorite foods when she was in New Zealand: "I like Marmite. When Rosé and I were in New Zealand, we were always happy when people gave us Vegemite or Marmite."
Even after working as a solo singer, Jennie still remembers her sisters in the group Blackpink. She confidently talked about the group's first milestone: "I've always been a member of Blackpink. We released our first single in August 2016." It is known that although Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa have left YG Entertainment, the three have not left Blackpink and the group's activities are still handled by the old management company.
Regarding the release of her first solo song "SOLO", Jennie said, "It's been about 5-6 years. While preparing for Mantra, I looked back at the videos and pictures from when I was working on SOLO, and I looked so young and cute."
Jennie also talked about the difference between working as a solo artist and working in a group. She said that working as a solo artist is very different. Because if she was working solo, she would be alone in the studio, but with a group, she and the members would discuss everything and come to an agreement if everyone agreed. Now, when working solo, she has to make all the decisions by herself and Jennie said that is the biggest difference.
Recently, right after its global release, Jennie's single "Mantra" immediately entered the iTunes charts in many countries around the world.
Accordingly, the song debuted at number 2 on both the global and European iTunes song charts.
In addition, this song has topped the iTunes top song chart in 59 countries and territories including: Argentina, Brunei, Cambodia, Chile, El Salvador, Greece, Malaysia, Oman, Philippines, Peru, Thailand, Vietnam... as of midnight October 13, Korean time.
"Mantra" also reached number 1 on the iTunes chart in the US, becoming Jennie's first song to do so.
In Vietnam, the song currently has nearly 30 million views on YouTube and reached top 1 trending on YouTube Vietnam.
Mantra is said to have a catchy melody, helping Jennie show off her advantages in rapping and dancing. In the MV, Jennie attracts attention with her figure-hugging outfit. She freely shows off her sexy body through seductive dance moves. This also caused Mantra to receive some mixed reviews.
The Bias List website rated Jennie's newly released song 4.75. Many fans commented that the MV was well-invested in visuals but the lyrics of Mantra were cliché and monotonous.
Contrary to the somewhat harsh comments on The Bias List, The Korea Times praised Jennie's new music product: "Mantra is a powerful and energetic song, encouraging everyone to shine in their own unique way."
