Queen Elizabeth II has announced the sad news of her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, according to Reuters.
"Prince Philip passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle. We will make further announcements at the appropriate time," Buckingham Palace said.
Mr Philip had been hospitalized for four weeks earlier this year to treat an infection in preparation for heart surgery, then returned to Windsor Castle in early March.
The British Prime Minister and the Australian Prime Minister were the first two leaders to offer condolences for the great loss of the British Royal Family.
Born in 1921 and a Greek prince, Mr. Philip married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947. He was instrumental in modernizing the monarchy in the post-World War I period. 2, and is also a key figure in the queen's trust.
Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Philip have four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to Prince Philip and declared national mourning. "We pay tribute to the duke... above all his unwavering support for the Queen over the past 70 years," Mr Johnson said.
Flags on historic buildings in England have flown at half-mast.

"We, as a nation and a kingdom, are grateful for the life and extraordinary work of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."
According to the Guardian, Prince Philip made his final official appearance later that year at the Royal Marines Parade at Buckingham Palace.
A former naval officer, Prince Philip once admitted he found it difficult to give up a career in the military he loved to take up a job as monarch.
Mr. Philip was respected by the British in part because of his charm. In terms of family life, Mr. Philip is considered the mainstay, but in public, he always stands behind Queen Elizabeth II to keep the royal etiquette.
Mr. Philip has made more than 22,000 public appearances alone and has gradually appeared less since August 2017 and only occasionally appears at some events. The last time Prince Philip appeared at a major event was in July 2020, when he attended a military parade at Windsor Castle.
Windsor Castle is a royal palace located in west London and where he resided while the British government issued a blockade order because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
