At any stage of life, each of us is faced with psychosocial conflicts stemming from individual needs that conflict with social needs. Some of them are solvable, and some are not, especially for children, where problem-solving and adaptive skills are limited. Therefore, certain difficult situations can trigger negative thoughts and emotional outbursts, leading children to seek ways to end stress by suicide.
Currently, teen suicide is increasing, but adults and parents do not know how to identify, support and intervene. Studies have shown that the leading cause of teen suicide is anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are common problems and are common during adolescent development (the transition from childhood to adulthood). This is a very sensitive age to the impacts of the environment and society due to physiological and psychological changes at this age.
In Vietnam, one of the common causes of depression in adolescents is the pressure of studying and taking exams. The too-heavy class schedule, including full-time study and extra lessons, takes up most of the time, making children feel stressed and tired all the time. In addition, some children easily fall into a state of "psychological shock" and think negatively, even ending their lives after failures in study and exams. Currently, in fact, in Vietnam, mental health issues, especially the psychology of school-age teenagers, have not been given much attention. According to the data of a number of studies in Vietnam, the rate of adolescents suffering from depression is 26.3%, children having thoughts about death is 6.3%, children planning suicide is 4, 6% and children who attempted suicide 5.8%.
In addition, conflict in life is also one of the causes of teen suicide. Disagreeing relationships, conflicts with family, friends, and society but are not shared can prevent children from finding solutions to resolve. Children are more likely to have negative, out-of-control thoughts that lead to suicidal behavior and see suicide as a way to help get rid of the deadlocks in life.
What can we do?
Teen suicide is a preventable problem. Understanding the causes and warning signs will help parents find ways to deal with and prevent this condition.
- Do not impose academic achievement on children, do not set too high expectations for children because this will put pressure on children.
- It is necessary to create closeness and closeness between parents and children so that children can confide and share when having difficulties in learning and in social relationships.
- Allocate study and entertainment time for children in a reasonable way. Should organize picnics, or let children participate in outdoor activities, to ensure a healthy spiritual life for children.
- Teach children life skills so that they are able to cope with life's events.
Remember, teen suicide is preventable.
