Once a famous actor, born into a wealthy family, Ha Bao Sinh's current life surprises many people. He wakes up early in the morning, rakes leaves, does gardening and is a vegetarian.
Ha Bao Sinh's life story is more thrilling than any TV drama script. From a shining star, he threw himself into gambling, losing one billion Hong Kong dollars (about 3,300 billion VND) in one night, then suddenly shaved his head, donned a monk's robe, and lived in seclusion in a temple for nearly 20 years.
What made a rich and famous young master choose such an "escape" path?
Although not born into a wealthy family for many generations, Ha Bao Sinh (born in 1967) still had a "silver spoon in his mouth" thanks to a father who started from scratch, rising from a small factory owner to a billionaire during the period when Hong Kong was flourishing.
Ha Bao Sinh's father is the Chairman of Bao Sinh Bank, with total assets of 30 billion Hong Kong dollars (90 trillion VND) in 2008. His mother runs a cosmetics and feng shui products business. Since childhood, the actor has lived in luxury, living in a villa on the top of a mountain, wearing imported branded goods, and having a private driver wherever he goes.
His family expected Ha Bao Sinh to follow in his father's footsteps and become the quiet heir to the financial empire, so they sent him to study interior design in Canada. But he had the soul of an artist.
Ha Bao Sinh's chance to enter the entertainment industry was when he went to karaoke with friends, was discovered by a music company and signed a contract to become a singer. His studies were also dropped from there. His name became more known, he started to become an MC, leading the program "Tan Ca Kim Khuc" or "Diem Nuong Tin Nghiem Giai Tich", then joined TVB.
In the 90s, TVB was the place where famous stars were born, and with his handsome appearance and scholarly temperament, Ha Bao Sinh quickly established a foothold. After signing the contract, he continued to join the station's actor training class, officially debuting as an actor.
Soon after, Ha Bao Sinh became a familiar face on the small screen. His most memorable role was Lam Binh Chi in "Tieu Ngao Giang Ho" in 1996 - the character transformed from a gentle scholar to a cruel avenger, portrayed by the actor with exquisite detail down to every glance, making it unforgettable for the audience.
In addition, Ha Bao Sinh also left his mark with humorous roles in "Kim Ngoc Man Duong", or cold in "Tan Long Mon Khach San". Handsome, good at acting, good at singing, he was once the model of "all-round star" of TVB.
Born into a rich family, Ha Bao Sinh did not rely on his family and had a strong will to strive. From a young ag.e, he was also good at business, investing in beauty salons and computers, thanks to which he had his own assets. Becoming a public figure was a stepping stone for the actor to become richer.
However, the halo also brought temptations. With mone.y and fame, Ha Bao Sinh gradually fell into a life of indulgence. He spent mone.y like water, often appeared at entertainment venues with rich young masters, and dated many beauties, causing the press to constantly report on him.
According to relatives and friends, Ha Bao Sinh's life is even more luxurious than before he entered the entertainment industry. The actor always wears expensive branded goods and owns countless expensive cars. Every time he goes to film, he uses a different "car". After finishing work, the actor will gather with his friends to drink and date girls.
But what really caused Ha Bao Sinh to fail was... gambling. At first, it was just a few games for fun, but gradually the actor became immersed in million-dollar gambling games. He even turned his entire villa into a casino, a place frequented by businessmen, friends and all kinds of "gambling partners". At one point, in just one night, the handsome man of the Smiling, Proud Wanderer lost more than a billion Hong Kong dollars - a number that made the whole of Hong Kong buzz.
Many rumors appeared: some said he was framed, others said he broke things after losing. But the truth is that it was that shoc.k that made Ha Bao Sinh wake up. On the way home after that fateful night, the actor came across a homeless person sleeping soundly on the sidewalk, wrapped in a torn blanket and suddenly thought: "I have a villa, a luxury car, but why can't I sleep as well as this person?".
That question haunted Ha Bao Sinh, making him start to look back at his life: mone.y, fame, material things... none of them brought true happiness. "Apart from mone.y, I have nothing" - the actor once said in an interview.
One day, Ha Bao Sinh met his old friend and was advised by him to follow the path of Buddhism. The actor agreed and was taught Buddhism by his friend and taken to listen to many sermons. Thanks to that, he began to repent and gave up all his entertainment.
After that, Ha Bao Sinh took the initiative to break up with his girlfriend of more than a year and left his family's luxurious villa to seek refuge in Buddhism. His family strongly opposed his desire to become a monk because he was the only son. His assets of up to 3 billion Hong Kong dollars had no heirs, and no one took care of his family's ancestral altar.
Despite all the advice and opposition, at the ag.e of 38, Ha Bao Sinh was determined to shave his head and become a monk. Ironically, even though he was already a monk, he still held shares in 3 listed companies. And then he gave up everything: his designer suits were changed to brown robes, his expensive watches were replaced with wooden rosaries, and his luxury credit cards were cu.t in half to be... bookends.
Up to now, Ha Bao Sinh has been practicing for 20 years, his life is incredibly simple: waking up at 4am to chant sutras, gardening, raking leaves, eating vegetarian food, drinking spring water. No longer in the spotlight, no longer being pursued by the press, he is now like a gentle uncle in the countryside, always smiling when meeting pilgrims.
Many people tried to find the temple where the handsome man from the movie "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" practiced to ask: "Do you regret it?". He just smiled: "Before, I was like a kite tied to mone.y, no matter how high I flew, I was not free. Now I have nothing, but I feel extremely relieved". The young master also joked: "The bank account is empty, but the inner account is full. Every day I get to bask in the sun, listen to the birds sing, and have nothing to worry about".
