Ai Van was born in 1954 in a family with an artistic tradition in Hue Street, Hanoi. Her mother is a reformed artist Ai Lien and her father is Ha Quang Dinh, owner of Viet Film (the first private film studio in Vietnam).

She is still praised by the audience as the one who brings the beauty and standard voice of the original elegant Hanoi girl.

Thanks to being born in a family with an artistic tradition, from a young age, Ai Van was exposed to music and knew how to sing cai luong. She said:

"My mother was from the North but sang with a Southern accent, from neo-music to cai luong. At that time, I found her singing very funny, but gradually I found it good. After 1954, my mother followed the Southern reformed troupes. That's why, ever since I knew how to sing cai luong, I sang with a Southern voice."

Although Ai Van's father is not an artist, he is very passionate about music and loves artists, so he supports his daughter to pursue art. From a young age, she sang and even acted in movies.

Since 1971, at the age of 17, Ai Van has been involved in making short plays for Television Station. After that, she went to the South to join the Lotus Dance Troupe. Thanks to the standard voice, Ai Van is also a radio announcer.

In 1976, Ai Van graduated from Hanoi Conservatory of Music and after graduating, worked at the Vietnam Light Music Theater in 1979.

Ai Van belongs to a group of singers who are well-trained in vocals and have a background in folk art from their family, so they sing very well, not only technically but also emotionally. She possesses a high, bright, flying light lirico soprano voice with a very special timbre.

As a result, Ai Van from a young age has been admired by a large audience. She is one of the first light music singers of the North after 1975 with great success, her voice covered the radio stations through songs such as Song of Construction, Million Roses...

In 1982, Ai Van went to Germany to participate in the Dresden International Music Festival and won the grand prize. This is the first light music award of a Vietnamese singer in the international arena. After that, she performed in many places around the world.

After 1990, Ai Van went abroad to settle down and also had great success abroad. She just entered the audition and sang, and the director of the center Thuy Nga agreed to sign a recording and recording contract.

Ai Van's success is an extremely rare feat in Thuy Nga. Comedian Chi Tai recounted: "When Ai Van entered Thuy Nga, there were at least three singers who did not want to sing with her."

However, Ai Van has gradually conquered the audience and colleagues thanks to her talent. Not only can she sing well, but Ai Van is also very good at acting and dancing beautifully, so she can take care of complicated dance performances on Thuy Nga's stage.

What makes Ai Van different from other overseas singers is that she specializes in Northern folk music, with the sound of quan ho and ca tru. On the stage of Thuy Nga, she transformed into many characters such as Thuy Kieu, Thi Mau... In addition, Ai Van also sang light music very well.

Ai Van is also the first singer to support Chi Tai. He recalled: "I got where I am today partly thanks to the help of Ms. Ai Van.

At that time, I mixed some songs for Ai Van such as Tat Nuoc Tou Dinh, Ly tree banyan. When I finished mixing, Ai Van liked it very much and passed the recording to the director of the center Thuy Nga, telling them that there was a person named Chi Tai who was very funny and charming.

Another time, Ai Van called me over and said: "Tai, I will sing the song Moon in the tea garden, Tai will arrange it for me".

I rewrote the whole mix and sent it to Ai Van, not using the old one. After listening to it, Ai Van liked it very much.

When it was time to record, she called over and said: "Can I ask Tai to perform this song now. Tai just sit, I sing wherever I go. Tai will go there."

This was a new opportunity for me at that time. It was also the first time I stepped onto the stage of Paris By Night with an acting role."

Tragedy private life, suicide, had to flee to Germany

Successful and beautiful on stage, but Ai Van has a rather tragic private life. She had two husbands before going abroad. In particular, the marriage with her second husband left her with many turbulence and suffering.

Because of her suffering, Ai Van decided to find a way to go to Germany, leaving her career at the peak. However, the process of going abroad for the female singer also encountered many difficulties. Because of some incidents, Ai Van couldn't go. Too destitute, she took sleeping pills to commit suicide. Ai Van says:

"Receiving the news, I committed suicide because my personal life was too tragic, there was no way to escape, no other choice. I took sleeping pills to commit suicide, fortunately the nanny found out and took her to the hospital to wash her intestines." .

After that, Ai Van's father did everything for his daughter to study abroad. Ai Van finally made it to Germany in the pain of having to leave her 4-year-old son behind.

After going to Germany, events still kept coming to Ai Van. At that time, East Germany and West Germany merged, making Ai Van school to study abroad no longer exist. She had to stop studying, carry her suitcase and rush to the street to earn a living.

In 2000, when her career was stable, Ai Van suddenly discovered that she had cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy. Since then, she was forced to withdraw from the stage to recuperate.

Currently, Ai Van is no longer singing. She lives peacefully with her third husband, a computer engineer, and has a daughter together. The son with her ex-husband also lives in the US with Ai Van.
