From a young age, little Tran Thi Ngoc Anh (birth name of singer Huong Lan) has shown a talent for singing and a different sense of hearing. Imitating singing to her father's lute very well, Ngoc Anh is indeed the son of an early family imbued with Southern folk songs. Both are famous Cai Luong artists, so Ngoc Anh's parents and everyone in the family sing well.

Realizing that his daughter could go far on the artistic path, artist Huu Phuoc devoted herself to teaching Anh to familiarize herself with the folk music and the art of cai luong. To overcome the hardships in making a living, Ngoc Anh has since had to follow her father to sing. In 1966, by chance during a singing trip, Ngoc Anh met musician Truc Phuong, a king of love songs and his singing life changed unexpectedly.

With the first song Ai came to Hue, singer Huong Lan quickly emerged under the training of Truc Phuong. On Saigon Radio, a series of later songs by Huong Lan were played regularly. Huong Lan became more and more famous for the Bolero songs at that time by musicians Truc Phuong, Duy Khanh, Nhat Truong, Ngai Thuy Mien... Broken marriage in France

Huong Lan and Cai Luong artist famous for her role as Diep - Chi Tam fell in love after their artistic successes together, they got married at the end of 1975. Radiant in love and glory on stage, Huong Lan was just 19 years old at the time. The artist gave birth to a son the following year, named Bao Nhi.

Famous from an early age, Huong Lan caused many regrets when her father, a reformed artist Huu Phuoc, sponsored her to France in 1978. Thoughts in the West, the life of Huong Lan and her husband - artist Chi Tam would go smoothly. but because there is no performing environment like in the country, the two have had a rather difficult life. To make a living, Huong Lan has to do many different jobs. Although she just gave birth to her second son, every day, Huong Lan had to take the train to Paris to roll spring rolls for a Vietnamese company here for 8 hours.

After a while, Huong Lan moved to work for a candy company. Singing only works according to each season of the year such as Easter or Christmas, New Year's Eve... Not enough to live, Huong Lan has to turn to work as a cashier for a supermarket in Paris. Life was difficult, Huong Lan's marriage with Chi Tam also began to be unstable. They separated after 2 years of struggle in France and 2 children live with their mother.

"Actually, both were too young at that time, but in the present case, it would not be so bad," singer Huong Lan once shared with the press. After the divorce, Huong Lan began to sing more.

Love in America

In 1985, Huong Lan brought her two children to the US to settle down. In early 1986, at the birthday party of singer Elvis Phuong, she met Mr. Dang Quoc Toan, an aeronautical mechanical engineer. The two fell in love and officially got married in 1988. Mr. Toan had three children of his own before moving to live with her.

With a husband who has been with her for more than 30 years, singer Huong Lan shared, in order to have lasting happiness, the two had to stay together and forgive each other, looking at each other's positive points so that the mistakes were not made. barriers to separate them.

Huong Lan confided: "He is very good and patient. On weekends, I go to the tea room to sing, he goes to pick them up. Sometimes when he goes to far away to sing, he sees him off to the airport and then comes back with his children to learn martial arts, go to the lake to slide. My husband taught everything and I was a housewife, taking care of the family besides singing. Later when he retired, we bought a 12-acre garden in Binh Phuoc and an apartment in An Phu Dong, TP. My husband stayed to take care of the garden while I lived in the US, sometimes returning to Vietnam to sing.

In recent years, my health was not good, so my husband followed me to the US. On occasions when I went to perform far away, he also followed. In the US, we have a three-bedroom house with a large garden of vegetables and fruit trees. My husband has "hand flowers", repairing the house by himself. He grows flowers, fruits, vegetables of all kinds... Our home is small but cozy and very Vietnamese."

Married life for more than 30 years, like other couples, for long-term happiness, Huong Lan said there are times when she is sad and jealous. The female singer confided: "My husband is not a perfect person, sometimes he flies, but he is a good father. He loved and cared for my children like his own. That's why we kept our happiness. Sometimes he makes me sad, but then, like many other women, I forgive him when he knows his fault. I think happiness does not come naturally. Every success goes through turbulence. Happiness and success are there.

The 30-year marriage has proved the harmony, care and sharing of the singer Huong Lan and her husband. Now that their children are grown, she and her husband return home more often. Her trips to performances and charity work are always accompanied by her husband. At the age of 65, singer Huong Lan wants to use her singing voice for charity activities. In 2020, Huong Lan and her husband celebrate 3 decades together at Ba Giong Church, Tien Giang. "The road I have been on has been very fortunate and quite favorable, but to stand on the stage until today, I have to live very disciplined (no alcohol, smoke, eat carefully...) and sometimes have to forget my "me" or my hobbies", Huong Lan confided.
