In the early hours of March 27th, a steel beam weighing over 10 tons unexpectedly fell onto Nguyen Huu Tho Street in Ho Chi Minh City, crushing the front of a garbage truck, killing the driver and paralyzing traffic in the area for an extended period.
A serious traffic accident occurred in the early morning of March 27th at the southern gateway to Ho Chi Minh City, when a giant steel beam unexpectedly fell onto the road, crushing the front of a garbage truck, killing the driver instantly and causing a prolonged traffic jam on this vital route.
According to initial information, at approximately 2:00 AM on the same day, a tractor-trailer transporting a steel girder over 20 meters long and weighing about 10 tons was traveling on Nguyen Huu Tho Street towards the Kenh Te Bridge to enter the city center via Khanh Hoi Street. Upon reaching the base of the Kenh Te Bridge, in Tan Hung Ward, it suddenly collided head-on with a garbage truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The powerful collision caused the chains securing the steel beam to snap. The massive steel beam, weighing tens of tons, fell onto the road, collapsing directly onto the front of the garbage truck's cabin, trapping the driver inside. The cabin was severely deformed, turning the scene into a chaotic mess in the middle of a major thoroughfare.
Immediately afterwards, rescue forces, in coordination with local residents, quickly deployed to rescue the victim, pulling him out of the cabin and transporting him to the hospital for emergency treatment. However, due to the severity of his injuries, the driver did not survive, leaving great grief for his family and the community.
The accident occurred on what is considered a "bottleneck" connecting the southern area with the center of Ho Chi Minh City, causing traffic chaos in the area from early morning. The steel girder blocking the road brought almost all vehicles heading towards the city center to a standstill, and many secondary roads were also severely affected due to the prolonged traffic congestion.
By over 8:00 AM, authorities deployed large specialized cranes to lift the steel beam out of the garbage truck's cabin and move the damaged vehicles. Meanwhile, at the Ngo Thi Bi – Nguyen Huu Tho intersection, traffic police continuously directed and regulated traffic to minimize congestion and ensure the safety of passersby.
The incident once again raises concerns about the safety of transporting bulky materials, especially large blocks of steel, on urban roads. Immediately after the accident, many drivers and witnesses expressed worry about the risk of similar accidents if transportation is not strictly controlled.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and verifying the victims' identities. Simultaneously, the road management unit is coordinating with rescue forces to plan for repairs and ensure traffic returns to normal as soon as possible.
The accident serves as a reminder to the community and transport companies to strictly adhere to safety regulations, especially for heavy goods, in order to avoid similar tragic consequences. The swift coordination between the public and authorities contributed to further mitigating risks and minimizing damage after this unfortunate incident.
The accident also prompted authorities to advise people to limit travel through the area at the foot of the Kenh Te bridge while repairs were underway, and to remind transportation companies to increase vehicle inspections and ensure safety when transporting bulky, heavy goods weighing tons, in order to avoid unfortunate risks.
