Meningococcal meningitis has broken out in Ho Chi Minh City and surrounding provinces with a rapid rate of spread. Due to the potential for rapid deterioration within just 24 hours of onset, the health sector has raised the alert level to a high level in anticipation of a potential public health catastrophe.
Rapid onset of the disease and the haunting specter of map-like purpura.
On March 26th, the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases confirmed the admission of new meningococcal infections with extremely dangerous progression. Most notably, the case involved a 21-year-old student residing in Binh Loi Trung ward, Ho Chi Minh City. The patient developed a fever on March 9th, but was transferred to the emergency room just two days later in a state of severe meningitis. Upon reviewing the patient's medical history, doctors noted that the student had never been vaccinated against meningococcal disease – a "gap" in defense that allowed the bacteria to easily attack the central nervous system.
Meanwhile, the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit also successfully treated an 11-year-old girl, LTYV, who was admitted in critical condition. The patient exhibited typical signs of meningococcal type B infection: persistent high fever, severe headache, and especially the appearance of "map-shaped" hemorrhagic rashes. These are dark patches of skin with central necrosis – a sign that the bacteria had entered the bloodstream causing severe septicemia. The appearance of these cases at the same time as the death of an 11-year-old student in Phu Quoc has raised concerns about a potential outbreak in schools and residential areas.
Life-or-death moments: The "golden hour" that saves patients' lives.
Meningococcal infection is likened by medical professionals to a race against death. The bacteria are transmitted through the respiratory tract and attack so rapidly that they can cause septic shock and multi-organ failure within hours. The case of little YV is a testament to the importance of early detection. Her family said that after hearing that a classmate at Duong Dong 4 Primary School (Phu Quoc) had contracted the disease, they immediately took her to a tertiary hospital in Ho Chi Minh City as soon as she showed signs of fatigue.
Thanks to taking advantage of the "golden window" for aggressive intervention according to the treatment protocol, doctors helped the child avoid the clutches of death. However, not everyone is so lucky. The health sector warns that meningococcal meningitis has a very high mortality rate if treatment is delayed. Even if saved, patients may still face severe neurological sequelae or require amputation due to hemorrhagic necrosis.
Urgent recommendation: Isolation and precautions during the first 24 hours.
Given the risk of rapid spread, the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) has coordinated with hospitals to immediately implement containment measures. For those in close contact with infected individuals, such as family members living together or classmates, taking preventive medication is mandatory and must be done as soon as possible, ideally within 24-48 hours of contact.
Specifically, adults can use a single dose of Ciprofloxacin 500mg, while children under 12 years old need Azithromycin according to their weight under the guidance of a doctor. These cases also require strict health monitoring for 10 days. The health sector emphasizes that, in addition to preventive medication, the most fundamental and effective solution for proactive disease prevention remains vaccination. People should not be complacent about symptoms such as fever, headache, or unusual rashes, and should immediately report any history of contact with the source of infection to protect themselves and the community.
Ho Chi Minh City: This outbreak has caused over 8,000 cases, and 3 children have died.
Hany Đan21:32:02 26/03/2026A severe hand, foot, and mouth disease outbreak has occurred in Ho Chi Minh City, with the number of cases increasing by nearly 70% in just one week. The highly virulent EV71 variant has claimed three lives, forcing the health sector to activate a citywide red alert.
