In order to build a leading company in the field of stationery with a market capitalization of approximately VND 4,000 billion today, Mr. Gia Tho - has experienced a hard time in the sun and rain, cycling around the city selling ballpoint pens.
Two gold threads, 1 car that makes up the property
Before 1981, Ms. Gia Tho, like many young people at that time, only thought that they had to work hard to earn money to help make their family life better. Following in his family's footsteps of trading at the Chinese market in District 6, Mr. Tho rode his bicycle to sell ballpoint pens throughout Saigon every day. When he accumulated 2 gold threads, he realized that the necessities market in Vietnam at that time was very lacking, while almost everyone needed a pen to learn words.
In 1981, Gia Tho established a small factory with 20 employees. Initially, the capital was very small, with only 2 gold threads starting a business and the biggest asset is a bicycle, the Chinese owner has to cum a lot of stages from production, sales, sales and collection. Because the capital is too limited, Mr. Gia Tho has to use revolving money, which means that in 1 week he can only afford production costs for 3 days, on the 4th day, bring the product to sell at newsstands in Saigon and wait to collect money always on the spot. Tho then used the money to produce and save profits to pay workers' wages. Because of the small capital, Mr. Tho also did not dare to leave termites in Tan Binh market because when termites were removed, they had to abandon them according to wholesale orders and collect money later. Mr. Tho and his employees struggled until 1996 when they began to have stable revenue.
Sharing about the difficulties at the beginning of his business, Mr. Gia Tho said that his wife played a very important role. At that time, the sister had experience in sales for a soap factory that she set up herself. This is also the chance that 2 people come together.
"My wife used to have 1 soap manufacturing facility. My wife took the soap to deliver. She does not deliver far but only distributes in the West, Binh Tay Market and New Big Market.
And I also cum all kinds of things: At the production manager's house, take the goods to deliver and directly collect money to buy raw materials as capital, from which the 2 people meet, get to know each other and get married. Later working for Thien Long, her role from the grassroots to the joint stock company was in the management department, in charge of the business segment. Although I later used a professional management model, I also needed my wife's contribution. She may not have done it directly, but tried to support personnel in the business, now she is a member of the Board of Directors and continues to support and trust her husband," Mr. Tho emphasized the role of his wife in his success.
Recalling the journey of starting a business, Mr. Gia Tho said that at that time this field was quite new and small, there were no facilities producing necessities in Vietnam. He also did not have as many choices as he does now, but only followed social reality. When the country was just liberated after 1975, people had to queue for daily necessities. Therefore, Mr. Tho only thinks that society lacks something, do that, what life needs, focus on developing that product.
Over the past 40 years, Thien Long has experienced a full range of economic development models, from households, individuals, production facilities, limited companies, to joint stock companies and then listed on the stock exchange. From the experiences that accompanied each moment of transformation of the country, Mr. Tho felt the obvious change of Thien Long at each stage. The market has also made great strides, regulators also seek to change to better suit the needs of consumers.
Learning and Luck are 2 factors that create success for Thien Long boss
Chairman Thien Long said that his success comes from continuous learning and effort, but it is also indispensable for luck. Recalling the time when he was welding exam around 1992, the businessman said that once when he was struggling to find a way to rotate capital, his facility was fortunate to be supported by the Department of Labor, War Invalids & Social Affairs with an interest-free loan program of VND 200 million for enterprises renting factories with a scale of 200 workers.
Because at that time there were not many production facilities eligible for labor contracts, tax declaration and other strict requirements, Mr. Gia Tho was determined to prove that his facility was capable of obtaining loans. From this 200 million, Mr. Tho expanded the factory and hired 200 workers and increased the number of orders, sought access to larger markets and the momentum went up from there.
Although he does not have much knowledge about business, nor has he gone through any training school, Thien Long always thinks that he must learn continuously to be able to develop. In 1993, Taiwanese enterprises were the first to invest in Vietnam. Therefore, the Taiwanese government has a program to support young Chinese entrepreneurs to study business administration for free in Taipei. Mr. and Mrs. Gia Tho seized this opportunity to learn more about how to run a business.
By 2002, Vietnam began to appear many programs in business administration, Mr. Gia Tho attended many classes from domestic to traveling to the US to visit factory models in the US and meet professors to learn more. From here, the new entrepreneur began to learn about the stock market in the US, gradually learned and began to prepare the journey for the company to be listed on the exchange. It was not until 2010 that Thien Long was listed on the exchange, but Tho said that since 2005, the company has started to prepare in all aspects.
"My success is no special secret, it's just learning. I find that if we lack something, we learn that, just as we like to eat, we find it. I have always been hungry to learn, not only from outsiders but also from my own employees. As the company grew, I hired good engineers, good experts to work with me to learn a lot from them.
The process of working together, exchanging with each other is learning. Thien Long's slogan is learning. "Learning is lifelong" and now changed to "The Power of Knowledge." In marketing, too, Thien Long like many other businesses wants sales to increase day by day, but our mission is still to minister to students.
Over the years, Thien Long has persisted with the relay program, each year growing and expanding nationwide. Although the cost of organizing 1 relay program is not small", the owner of Thien Long said slowly.
