In Chan Hung, Vinh Tuong district, Vinh Phuc, ask Mr. Nguyen Van Truong's house - all the villagers know. Mr. Truong's house stands out in the middle of the village because thousands of dishes are embossed all around, from the gate, stairs, walls to rooms.
Ms. Ho Thi Nga said that her husband had just passed away 100 days ago, enjoying a life of 63 years. Mr. Truong died when his wish to complete the house was still unfinished. "By the time he left, I still regretted it, he should have lived another 1-2 years to enjoy. I thought I loved him. Until now, I am touched by the achievements my husband has created, many people with money cannot do it," Ms. Nga is proud.
Mr. Truong used to work as a carpenter. During a visit to paint tables and chairs for a family working as an antique dealer in the district, he began to like and be passionate about it from there. Mr. Truong said that most of the pieces of pottery and porcelain he bought were relatively cheap, only a few pieces dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
When the economy was not enough, he went to ask for old items, even broken porcelain bowls and bottles that people discarded to bring back to attach to the house. He cycled to the provinces of Cao Bang, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang..., bought old things full of cars, put them in bags, and sent the bus to Vinh Phuc. There were times when he was isolated for several months, Mrs. Nga stayed at home worried about fever.
"My wife and I argue all the time because no matter how much money we have, he puts it all in the same clothes. There were times when he traveled for 3 months in a row, carrying back a whole box of dishes. I asked him, can you eat it, but why do you just go buy those things? He said he didn't eat first, he ate later," Ms. Nga recounted.
Helpless, she left him free to do what he liked. For 30 years, he has been decorating the house, painting all day and night. All the bowls and coins, he plastered himself with his hands without having to fly.
Some people in the village also talked and whispered, saying that he was crazy, had too much time, and did useless things. But Mr. Truong did not mind, he said, only by attaching them all to the wall like that can protect the heritage left by our ancestors, store many antiquities without worrying about being stolen or sold.
Mr. Truong's house has a total area of 114 m2, including 4 bedrooms and a living room. Currently, the mutant house is covered in nearly 10,000 porcelain plates, bowls and vases. A lot of unique images of the house have been spread in the media.
Since the day he died, Ms. Nga has been the one who replaced her husband, cleaning and preserving the "inheritance" left behind. Currently, she is the only one living in a large house, her children are all married, and sometimes come to play. All around the house are associated with memories, the silhouette of him when he was alive, for Mrs. Nga, it is an incomparable treasure.
"Some people pay 5 billion, I don't sell, even tens of billions. I want to fulfill his wish, keep the house for future generations," Ms. Nga affirmed.
Because he loved so much, he once put in a red book, borrowed 8 million VND with an interest of 3 cents. Over 7 years, the amount increased to more than 30 million VND. The more he was involved in his father's things, the more he was fascinated. Then one day Mr. Truong "Crazy" quit the painting profession, roaming the motorbike and ship along the Red River to Viet Tri, Lao Cai, Yen Bai... hunting.
"My journey to pick up antiques is very hard. On sunny afternoons, I rolled on the sandy and gravel beaches, picked up pieces of old pottery, a button, a coin, and an old slot that I also considered very valuable. In addition to picking up, I also ask about people and buy valuable things," he shared at the time of his birth.
Wen once said in the media, the most profound memory was the time he passed the side of Vinh Quang prison (Tam Dao) when his car was punctured. At noon, the sun was more than 40 degrees, there were no shops around the road, and my stomach was hungry. On the car, he carried several tens of pounds of pottery. He pushed the car over a slope of more than 2 km but seemed to be dead, reviving for a long time. This memory is so ingrained in his mind that every time he goes anywhere, he has the habit of straightening tires.
