Tran Quang Vinh, when he first came to the US, had only a plane ticket, no degree, and didn't know where to go or what to do. But now the Vietnamese 8x guy has become an employee sought after by leading technology companies such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Sony.
When he was only 7 years old, boy Tran Quang Vinh (born in 1986, in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) was fascinated with drawings. The way Vinh came to this art was to imitate his father, draw his mother, draw his family... At that time, the boy Vinh saw the wonderful images sketched on paper. Instead of having fun with friends every playtime, he sat in a corner to unleash his creativity from the comic books he had read.
At the age of 8, his parents divorced, Vinh lived with his mother. 2 years later, both his father and mother found their "private space". "When I was 15 years old, I decided to move out because of changes in my family," Vinh said.
Independent early, studying with the young man is not a concern, a top priority. In those years, Vinh neglected many subjects, almost immersed himself in design, so the results were always "lost" in class.
Another joy is the computer, Vinh tinkers with drawing on Microsoft Paint application and then has access to more professional design software. It is really something very new and strange in the early 90s of the last century, even in the richest and most modern city in the country.
"When I was a teenager, I lived a very wild life, with no clear direction. I didn't talk much, even with my parents, I was alone every day. I didn't know what I wanted, other than that. hobby with graphics, design", Vinh recalls.
When he was 18 years old, once, a friend of Vinh's father saw a poster he designed for him. Impressed, this person introduced him to work for a bilingual newspaper.
"And I had my first job as a newspaper graphic designer. The salary then was about 3 million VND per month. I was financially independent when I was 20 years old, still alone, had no need to exchange friends, for example. need to spend money," Vinh recalled.
After that, he changed jobs a few times, but he was still attached to the field of graphics and design. There are kind and sincere owners who have advised Vinh to go back to school to develop himself, at an age when all his friends have completed university education.
Encouraged by both his mother, he set foot in the lecture hall, although it was not easy. None of the schools accepted, so Vinh found a teacher who was the Dean of the Design Department.
He recounted convincing the teacher: "When I met him, I talked about my story. I said maybe my high school grades were low, but for the past 3-4 years, I've worked very hard, not lazy. lazy so want to be given a chance".
At the age of 25, Vinh had the opportunity to approach a new and innovative direction of the design industry, when the smartphone generation was born. He researched, encroached on software design and was invited to work as an executive of a design unit. His first software was born, unexpectedly received by a large number of people, becoming outstanding applications on the App Store.
The workplace then facilitated him to go to America. "America will certainly be very interesting, and of course, everyone dreams of such an opportunity," Vinh said.
He left the lecture hall halfway like that, when the dean himself advised him to quit school and seize the opportunity to work abroad. And once again, the bachelor's degree slipped through the boy's hands.
At the age of 27, Vinh Tran had the opportunity to go to the US to work, but when he was about to set foot in the US, Vinh received news that his job position had been canceled. Alone in the US, not knowing where to go, what to do, with the help of a friend, 2 weeks after the interview, Vinh got his first job in the US and worked as Head of Design in San Francisco. At that time, Vinh bought a Porsche and his first house. Products made by Tran Vinh are also featured on Forbes Best Design of the Year.
At the age of 29, Vinh Tran received an invitation from Google, but at this time he refused. 2 years later, when he received the second invitation, he became the first Vietnamese designer in Google's Product Global team without a degree. With his products, later on, he was invited by Sony to lead the Playstation's Japanese and American team to design PS5, but he refused Sony's offer to work for Google.
At the age of 35, Vinh Tran transferred to Meta after 7 rejections, belongs to the NPE (New product Experiment) team to find new ideas, leads the design team for artificial intelligence. Here, he owns a salary of up to 11 figures/year, or more than 1 billion VND per month.
At the age of 36, he started his own job murror.app helping people with depression using AI technology. At this peak of his career, he was also identified with persistent depressive symptoms.
"I didn't expect that I had been depressed for a long time without even knowing it. At that time, I understood why I always lived in isolation, not interacting with anyone. From childhood to adulthood, I always had a pain in my heart. very indescribable, repetitive. When I'm successful, life is smooth, my mood is often bad. I always want to cry, yearn to be heard, to share, to be a part of life. someone's," the leading technologist dropped his voice, choking.
Then everything turned upside down when the Covid-19 epidemic hit. "When work was no longer important but life, I realized the truth, I have been hiding at work for a long time to be safe. When there was no more work, I was thrown out of that hiding place, for face with constant pain ", Vinh lamented.
Not stopping, when he was 36 years old, his grandmother died, the torments increased, he was shocked by drugs to support depression, lost his emotions. Vinh once thought the worst: "Can't work like before, feeling like I've lost everything, seeing everything as meaningless, I thought about suicide".
The thought that helped him struggle at that time was that, if he could no longer work, he wanted to do something for the rest of his life. That was the idea that prompted him to set up his own workplace in January 2022. Gathering all his own experiences, he wants to turn into an experience of helping people who have suffered from depression by applying artificial intelligence. He and 15 associates in many countries work together to build better products to support and treat people with depression like me.
Currently, Mr. Vinh feels very happy to see that his two children are living fully and without deprivation in the US. He wants his child to have a good starting point in life. "The happiest and most beautiful thing is to have the support of loving people in the family, especially my mother, stepfather, younger brother and wife when I share my depression problem, everyone is supportive. me in what I do," Vinh said.
