The life of female journalist Suong Nguyet Anh
When she was a child, the teacher who taught her to read and write Chinese and Nom characters was her father - poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu. Therefore, right from childhood, Nguyet Anh was imbued with patriotic thought as well as showing intelligence and sharpness like her father. She and her sister, Nguyen Thi Xuyen, are both famous for their beauty and talent. Both are affectionately known by the people of the region as Nhi Kieu.
Coming from a Confucian family and being raised and educated carefully, although beautiful and famously intelligent, she was never arrogant but very simple and calm. When the family fell into a difficult situation, this poet accepted to leave school to work with Do Chieu to take care of the whole family.
When she was 24 years old, Nguyen Dinh Chieu passed away. Therefore, the young daughter at that time had to take over her father's school with her brother to continue teaching the people around. It was her talent that attracted the attention of Mr. Phu Xuyen - the Ba Tri government at that time. However, after asking her to be his wife but unsuccessfully, he took revenge and created a mind to harm.
To avoid Phu Xuyen, she and her brother Nguyen Dinh Chuc's family had to move to Cai Nua and Rach Mieu, My Tho. It was also here that Nguyet Anh had a relationship with the widowed vice-president and gave birth to her first daughter, Nguyen Thi Vinh. 'The joy is short-lived' when her husband was plotted to harm Phu Xuyen. However, this strong woman decided to keep her secret and stay there to raise the child, not accepting to go any further. It is also for this reason that the pen name of the famous woman in Ben Tre has an additional word Suong in front of Suong Nguyet Anh citadel. (Dew also means widow).
Vietnam's pioneer female poet - Suong Nguyet Anh
In the years 1906-1908, responding to Phan Boi Chau's Dong Du movement, she sold part of her estate and mobilized donations to help students study abroad in Japan.
In 1917, Suong Nguyet Anh brought her grandson to Saigon, with a group of patriotic journalists preparing to publish the first Vietnamese women's newspaper. On February 1, 1918, the first issue of the Women's newspaper was published, and Suong Nguyet Anh became the first female editor in the history of Vietnamese journalism. Women generally advocate raising people's knowledge, encouraging industry and agriculture, and especially promoting the role of women in society. The newspaper office is located at house number 155 Taberd Street, Saigon (now Nguyen Du Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City).
However, after nearly a year of operation, publishing 22 issues, in July 1918, the newspaper was discontinued. During those issues, Suong Nguyet Anh devoted all her talent and enthusiasm to contributing to the revival of the spirit of women in the country. The issues of the newspapers all mentioned the teaching of feminism, women's virtue and criticism of the strict laws against women at that time, and strongly advocated for the issue of equality between men and women.
Suong Nguyet Anh composed a lot, but did not collect them into a collection. Now there are only a few poems left, such as Doan Ngo Nhat Khuat Nguyen, Tuc Su, Chinh Phu Thi, Thuong Bach Mai, Nun Vinh, King Thanh Thai went to the South, the impression when Vietnamese soldiers went to the Au war... and some rhymes such as Ve Tieu love, Ve teacher Hy, Ve hit the topic.
Up to now, every time Suong Nguyet Anh is mentioned, people still see in her an active role model for women. She is a tough writer who once mentioned in the "Common Women" many issues about women's duties to the family and society. During the transition, the women of the country had just come out of the area to interact with Western culture, Ms. Suong Nguyet Anh was very worthy of being a pioneer female artist in Vietnam.
After "Common Woman", she was again invited to be the editor-in-chief of Lantern Nha Nam (the newspaper modified from the Common Woman) but she refused.
During this time, she often suffered from eye pain, and her health gradually deteriorated. Listening to the doctor, Suong Nguyet Anh took her grandson back to My Chanh Hoa (Ba Tri), where he stayed with his youngest brother, Nguyen Dinh Chiem, for treatment. But in a short time, her eyes were completely blind. However, she continued to follow in her father's footsteps, teaching Chinese characters and making medicine to help people live.
Suong Nguyet Anh died in January 1921 in My Chanh Hoa village, aged 57. She was buried next to her parents' graves, now in the poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu relic site, hamlet 6, An Duc commune, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province.
