Friday the 13th has long been associated with bad luck, with many tragic events in history coinciding with this day. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these rumors.
One of the most tragic events in history occurred on Friday, October 13, 1972, when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying the Uruguayan rugby team, crashed into the Andes Mountains in Chile. The crash killed 31 people, with only 14 surviving after facing extremely harsh conditions. The survivors waited more than two months for rescuers to find them, and their stories of resilience have become a memorable lesson in the power of the spirit in the face of adversity.
Just hours after the Andean crash, another incident occurred on October 13, 1972, when a Soviet Aeroflot 217 suffered a similar accident. The plane was attempting to land at a Russian airport in bad weather and crashed just 5km short of the runway. The incident killed 174 people, making it one of the most serious aviation disasters of its time.
On October 13, 1989, another notable event occurred in the financial sector. Immediately after the news that the UAL Corporation, the parent company of United Airlines, could not complete the acquisition, US stock indexes plummeted. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 190.58 points, the Nasdaq lost 14.9 points, and the S&P 500 fell 21.74 points. These strong fluctuations caused difficulties for the US financial market, greatly affecting investors and the economy.
Another devastating natural event that occurred on Friday the 13th was the bushfires in Victoria, Australia. These fires destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest and claimed many lives. Although the death toll was not as high as in other events, the consequences of the fires had a serious impact on both the environment and the community.
Another notable incident occurred on Friday, January 13, 2012, when the cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of western Italy. The ship capsized, leaving 31 people missing, and the shipâs captain was severely criticized for abandoning more than 4,000 passengers and crew to save himself. The incident not only caused loss of life, but also affected the tourism industry and led to international condemnation of the captainâs actions.
The tragic events that have occurred on Friday the 13th seem to have led many to believe that the day is unlucky. Interestingly, however, there has been no research to prove that the rate of accidents or disasters increases on this day. On the contrary, scientists have conducted studies to examine the correlation between Friday the 13th and unfortunate events.
For example, in 2011, German scientists conducted a study of hospital data over 3,281 days and found no link between Friday the 13th and increased emergency room visits. This suggests that although Friday the 13th is a day associated with many stories of bad luck, there is actually no clear evidence that the day actually brings bad luck.
According to historians and superstition experts, the fear of Friday the 13th stems from many legends and historical stories. One of the main causes comes from Christianity, when Jesus was crucified on a Friday and the number 13 was considered unlucky because there were 13 people attending the last supper, including Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
Additionally, in Norse mythology, the story of the god Loki, who sneaked into a party of 12 people and became the 13th person, causing the death of the god Balder, also contributed to the belief that the number 13 is unlucky.
Meanwhile, many other cultures such as the Greeks and Romans also have legends related to the number 13, but there are also some people who consider the number 12 a perfect number (12 months of the year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 animals...), therefore, the number 13 is considered an imperfect and unlucky number.
Although many notable events have occurred on Friday the 13th, this does not mean that this day is inherently unluckier than any other day. Scientific studies have shown that there is no clear link between Friday the 13th and an increase in accidents or disasters. It is important not to let superstitious beliefs affect our daily lives and work.
It can be said that Friday the 13th is part of a cultural superstition, and it only becomes truly unlucky if we believe in it. Excessive concern and anxiety about this day only increases fear and insecurity in our minds, instead of helping us see life in a more positive way.
