Once the face associated with Wednesday Addam, leaving such a deep impression that many fans consider her the classic model for this character, Christina Ricci is now ready to let go of this iconic character to make way for a new generation.
While Jenna Ortega is creating a fresh and gritty Wednesday, Ricci is taking a step back â not out of retirement, but to hand over the reins to his successors.
Christina Ricci Wants to Give Up 'Ownership' of Wednesday Addams
"I don't feel like I own this character," Ricci told The Hollywood Reporter. "The last time I played her, I was 12. I'm 44 now. Wednesday has been played by many other people over the years. I'm not comparing her to Shakespeare, but you know how many people have played Juliet? It's the same thing."
Christina Ricci played Wednesday in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993) â two films that are widely considered to be the best adaptations of Charles Addams' original comic strip. Ricci's performance was dark, cold, and almost cruel, but also charming and unforgettable. She nearly kille.d her brother with a guillotine, burned down her summer camp, and threatened her boyfriend. It was a role that set a new standard for the character â and one that would have put any successors under pressure.
Ricci and Jenna Ortega: Two Generations, One Spirit Wednesday
When Netflix announced the new Wednesday series starring Jenna Ortega, many fans expected Ricci to make at least one cameo. The result was more than met the eye: Ricci appeared in the series as Marilyn Thornhill, a botany teacher at Nevermore Academy. While she may no longer be Wednesday, Ricci's appearance serves as a bridge between two generations.
"I think what's great is that Jenna doesn't have to be in my shadow," Ricci once said in an interview. "I didn't want to take over the character in any way. And Jenna has done a completely different version of Wednesday that still feels authentic to the character. I really admire her."
Wednesday is always herself, no matter who she is.
That's the magic of Wednesday Addams, too: she was so comfortable in her own ski.n that it was impossible not to root for herâeven when she was throwing live piranhas into her pool. Over the generations, each actress has brought a different take, but the "Wednesday persona" has remained the same: smart, sharp, sly, and... sometimes a little scary.
Ortega, in particular, plays Wednesday brilliantly. Her character is still a terror to her teachers and classmates, but beneath that stoic facade is a soul full of emotion. It's that humanity that makes Ortega's Wednesday real and lovable in a whole new way. And perhaps it's Ricci's "letting go" that makes Ortega feel truly comfortable stepping into this weighty role.
What's new?
With a first season filled with bizarre murders, what will Wednesday season 2 bring?
The Nevermore School's most important students will all be back. Among them are Enid Sinclair, Wednesday's werewolf roommate, played by Emma Myers; Xavier Thorpe, the handsome artist, played by Percy Hynes White; Bianca Barclay, the mermaid, played by Joy Sunday; and Ajax Petropolux, Enid's petrified boyfriend, played by Georgie Farmer.
Many mourned the tragic end of principal Larissa Weems. However, actress Gwendoline Christie teased that there was a chance she would return for Wednesday season 2. "We haven't seen her buried in a coffin yet, have we?" she wrote humorously. The actress also shared with the media that "I feel like Larissa Weems wouldn't be affected by something as trivial as deat.h."
On the villain side, Christina Ricci's Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates is also expected to return. In the first film, the villain fled before Wednesday could take down Joseph Crackstone. It's unclear what happened to Laurel Gates afterward.
