"Waiting for You Until Tomorrow" is one of the notable films released in 2016. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Le Hoang and stars Tran Thanh in the lead role.
The film revolves around the character Ly "Cún," played by An Nguy , a young woman working at a fried chicken shop. She lives a simple life but harbors a passionate love for the famous singer Kevin Vũ ( Trấn Thành ). Ly not only admires Kevin as an idol but also sees his music as a source of spiritual encouragement in her monotonous life. One day, after a strange encounter with a mysterious old woman and a familiar dog, Ly embarks on a colorful journey to get closer to her dream. Along the way, she gradually realizes the true values of affection, trust between people, and the meaning of living fully in the present.
Upon its release, "Waiting for You Until Tomorrow" received considerable positive feedback from a segment of young audiences. Many considered the film a "beautiful ending" for Vietnamese cinema in 2016 because it wasn't overly boisterous, didn't chase after slapstick humor or intense drama, but instead offered a pleasant and bright feeling. The film's music was praised for its catchiness and suitability to the romantic spirit, while its message about faith, hope, and youthful love resonated deeply with viewers.
In particular, Tran Thanh surprised everyone by transforming from his familiar humorous MC image to play the introspective singer Kevin Vu. While not an outstanding performance, Tran Thanh's effort to change his image was recognized. This role showed his serious desire to expand his acting range, not just confining himself to comedic roles.
However, from a commercial standpoint, "Waiting for You Until Tomorrow" did not achieve the expected success. The film only grossed around 26 billion VND – a rather modest figure compared to the average Vietnamese film at the end of 2016. During the same period, "Sunshine" earned approximately 64 billion VND, while "Saigon Bodyguard" reached 39 billion VND. This difference shows that Tran Thanh and his team faced significant difficulties competing at the box office.
The reasons cited stem from several factors. The film lacked a sufficiently strong promotional campaign to generate widespread media attention. The young cast, including An Nguy, while offering a fresh perspective, lacked the experience to create significant appeal. Some critics also argued that the relationships between the characters were unconvincing, and the psychological development wasn't deep enough, failing to truly resonate with a wide audience.
Looking back at his career path, Tran Thanh shows many differences compared to his early days in the film industry. From "Cua Lai Vo Bau" (2019) surpassing 100 billion VND to a series of consecutive films grossing over 100 billion VND, the MC and actor has gradually become a name considered a "box office guarantee".
That success stemmed from more extensive production experience, a well-structured marketing strategy, growing personal brand appeal, and the thriving Vietnamese film market, with expanding theaters and a growing young audience. Therefore, "Waiting for You Until Tomorrow" may be considered a box office "failure," but it holds special significance in Tran Thanh's career journey. The film marked a phase where he dared to experiment, dared to step out of his comfort zone to seek new directions.
