King Charles III holds the position of heir to the throne the longest in British history. In early February, the late Queen Elizabeth II said that she "sincerely" wanted her eldest son to become king.
King Charles III was born on November 14, 1948. He is the first child of the late Queen Elizabeth and the late Prince Philip. The new king of England's childhood was not very attached to his parents, when his mother often traveled abroad, and the father was also busy with royal duties.
When Prince Charles was born, his mother was still holding the title of Princess Elizabeth. In 1952, after the death of her grandfather King George VI, Princess Elizabeth became Queen of England. Pictured, King Charles III attends his mother's coronation at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, when he was just 4 years old. From there, he topped the list of future successors to the throne and remained in that position for 70 years (from 1952 to 2022).
After three years of kindergarten in the palace, the parents of King Charles III decided they wanted to give their son more access to life outside the royal family. The couple sent their eldest child to Hill House, a preparatory school in West London. At the age of 7, Charles became the first heir to the British throne to attend a regular school.
From Hill House, Prince Charles then transferred to Cheam School in Berkshire. As a strict parent, the late Prince Philip was unhappy with his eldest son's timid personality and continued to send him to Gordonstoun boarding school, in Scotland in 1962. Charles then moved. to study at Timbertop School in Australia.
King Charles III's school days were not easy. During his early school years, Charles was often bullied by his friends. As the future heir to the throne, he is often noticed and teased by other students. In addition to being lonely when living away from his parents, he became more and more closed.
King Charles III holds a bachelor's degree in Archeology, Anthropology and History from Trinity College, Cambridge (UK). In July 1969, he was made Prince of Wales. Like many members of the family, at a young age, Charles also enlisted, starting to serve in the royal army. He served in the Royal Navy from 1971 to 1976.
In his youth, King Charles III had a hobby of playing polo. During a match in this sport in 1970, Charles first met Camilla Shand and immediately fell in love. The two parted ways when Charles joined the Royal Navy. When he was discharged from the army, Camilla was married to someone else. After his ex-lover got married, Prince Charles decided to date and marry Princess Diana Spencer, then 19 years old.
The wedding of Princess Diana and Charles became an event that was noticed around the world. The couple shared a kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at their wedding ceremony in July 1981. However, the marriage between Charles and Diana quickly fell apart because Prince Charles still had feelings for the old man in his heart. In 1996, the two officially divorced. In 2005, Prince Charles remarried to Camilla.
During their marriage, King Charles III and Princess Diana had two sons, Prince William, born in 1982, and Prince Harry, born in 1984. However, their relationship soon turned sour. Charles was accused of having an affair with his ex, Camilla, since 1986.
In December 1992, former British Prime Minister John Major announced that Charles and Diana had officially separated. Charles, Diana and Camilla's relationship became strained with the leak of an infidelity tape, the tearing of tabloids, and Princess Diana's harrowing accounts of her interview with Martin Bashir.
In 1996, Charles and Diana completed divorce proceedings. Not long after Charles threw Camilla's 50th birthday party in his hometown of Highgrove, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
During the early years of their marriage, Princess Diana and Prince Charles did not get along very well. The feelings of both for each other are not deep enough to bond for a long time. The main reason is probably because Charles was forced to marry Diana while he was still in love with his former love Camilla (who is now his wife), even though she was then married.
Diana said the "most terrible thing" happened before Prince Charles went on a five-week trip in March 1981, four months before the wedding. When the crown prince left, Diana was photographed by the paparazzi crying, leading many to speculate that Diana's sadness was due to parting with the Prince of Wales. An employee at the time said: "We have never seen such a touching farewell." At the same time, a woman who also witnessed the moment also added that Diana looked very distressed at the time.
In addition, the late princess also told how Charles and Camilla's relationship broke her marriage. Diana said: "I was still too young to understand all that was to come. And then someone in his office told me that my husband had ordered a bracelet for me. One day, I went into his office and asked, 'Oh, what's in that package?' The employee told me not to open it. I kept opening it and see the ring in it."
Years after the wedding, Charles once cried of disappointment and told friends, "I really wanted to cancel my 1981 wedding. When I got engaged, I discovered how terrible what could happen. ". Charles told friends that in the weeks before the wedding, he tried to explain his daily routine to Diana but she seemed unable to grasp what Charles was saying. The more he met Diana, the more Charles realized he was making a mistake.
The crown prince claims to blame no one - not the Queen or Prince Philip, but the hasty acquaintance with Diana. He is said to be haunted by the sad marriage of which he is still condemned to this day. Charles has long accepted his distorted portrayal of his personality, helpless in the face of critics' desire to change his mind, especially after the tragic passing of Princess Diana.
However, the crown prince was still angry and frustrated because of the untrue words about him. Charles blamed Diana for this, saying "Diana's words were dangerous, unbelievable and supported by someone close to the press". According to the crown prince, Diana created a version engraved in the psyche of the people, turning it into "history".
King Charles III ascended the throne in September after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
