Over the past two weeks, Ms. Le Thi Thu Hoa (28 years old) has been the name that has attracted public attention. She is the mother of Minh Hai (Bap), who is suffering from leukemia and has received more than 16 billion VND in support from the online community, with the help of Tik Toker Pham Thoai.
The story became controversial when the online community questioned financial transparency, leading to pressure to demand a statement. The 4-hour livestream on the evening of February 25 organized by Pham Thoai attracted more than 600,000 views, but the online community still had questions about many issues. On Give.Asia, the campaign "A Mother's Fight for Minh Hai" started on February 14, 2025, aiming for nearly 100,000 SGD (more than 1.8 billion VND) for Minh Hai.
At noon on February 25, the Give.Asia homepage suddenly posted a notice to stop this fundraising campaign, with the reason that the baby had progressed well and the baby's mother said that there was no need to raise more funds. "Dear supporters, we are pleased to share a positive update on MH's recovery. Thanks to the special care from the doctors and nurses at NUH (National University Hospital Singapore) and your generous donations, MH's condition has improved significantly. He is still alive and well enough to be transferred to the general ward," the post announced.
"Given his progress, MH's mother has informed us that there is no need for further fundraising. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks for your continued support and kindness during this challenging time," the post added.
Speaking to the media, Bap's mother said that she was the one who proactively contacted the Give.Asia fund after the public opinion exploded with unverified information spreading on social media. Previously, when Give.Asia was making donations normally, she received a call from a parent, whose child had been in the same hospital room with Bap in Vietnam, informing her that the online community was making fierce comments on social media. They harshly criticized the content related to charity issues directly on the Give.Asia fanpage.
This incident directly affected Bap in Singapore. Meanwhile, a nurse at the hospital asked her if she was a scammer, which made Hoa very sad and depressed. "At that moment, I was very afraid that the doctors and nurses here would misunderstand and affect my child's treatment. They also couldn't block comments. Therefore, I asked them to remove the post to avoid spreading negative emotions," Hoa said.
However, removing this post means that they will stop donating to Bap's case, and the campaign will also end. She thought and considered this issue a lot and agreed. At the same time, Hoa also updated the fund on Bap's latest situation, and at the same time, she said that she would send an email and all the evidence when the situation was stable.
Over the past few days, Bap's mother has also been under mental pressure due to the reaction from the online community. In particular, social networks have spread a photo of her sending 10 million VND to support another child with cancer. This photo immediately caused a "storm" and attracted public attention.
Bap's mother said she had sent that support to baby M., who is also a leukemia patient, in the same situation as her child. "I took that money from the livestream sales, not money that people gave to Bap. I even sent support to another pair of cancer twins. I just wanted to share with them a little bit because I also understand the feelings of a mother whose child is sick," she said.
In addition to the pressure from rumors on social media about the support for sick children, Bap's mother also faced a lot of gossip related to her personal life. She affirmed that her family is a farmer, lives a simple life, and does not buy a house or land as people have speculated. At the same time, the messages saying that she is in debt or has been in debt before are untrue.
Regarding her marriage, she said that she divorced at the end of 2021, at that time her husband's family in My Tan still kept in touch normally, except for her ex-husband. Therefore, the rumor that she was "not a single mother" was untrue. She and her ex-husband broke up, but her husband's family still treated her well. Occasionally, they still called to ask about Bap.
Hoa once confided that what she most desires is "for her child to be safe". Now, she just wants to focus on taking care of her child and maintaining her mental and physical health for the upcoming journey. At the same time, Hoa also looks forward to the day she returns to Vietnam to sort everything out.
