Girl taken from kindergarten: Suspect detained, showing signs of depression

The 4-year-old girl who was taken away by a woman in a kindergarten class on the afternoon of January 13 was found by local residents and Hai Phong City Police. The suspect involved in the incident has also been detained for investigation.

On the afternoon of January 14, confirming with VietNamNet reporter, the leader of the Criminal Police Department (CSHS) of Hai Phong City Police said that the child NTM (4 years old) suspected of being kidnapped earlier was found at 3:15 pm the same day in the area of Luong Khanh Thien street, Hai Phong city.

According to the representative of the People's Committee of Thuy Nguyen City, the location where the girl was found was in the Ga Market area, Cau Dat Ward, Ngo Quyen District, Hai Phong City. The woman who took the girl away was identified as Dong Thi Ha Thu (born in 2007, residing in Thuy Nguyen City, Hai Phong City). The police have detained the woman and are investigating the motive for the incident. The leader of the Criminal Police Department stated that the subject had an abnormal mentality, showing signs of depression.

Meanwhile, a representative of the People's Committee of Thuy Nguyen City said: "According to the initial information we have, this is not a case of child kidnapping. The woman showed signs of mental illness but loved children so she took the girl away. The police are investigating the specifics of the incident."

On the same day, Mr. Nguyen Van Nang, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thuy Nguyen City, said: "The police are continuing to investigate the case and the child is still healthy and safe. Currently, the family has been able to reach the child, and the child's psychology is basically stable."

Previously, as VietNamNet reported, on the afternoon of January 13, a woman wearing a black mask entered Thien Huong Kindergarten (Hai Phong) and took a 4-year-old girl away. Security cameras showed the image of the woman wearing black clothes, glasses, and a black mask, arriving at the kindergarten at nearly 4 p.m. and taking the child with her. This person held the child's hand and did not see the child protest.

Upon receiving information from Thuy Nguyen City Police and understanding the subject's movement direction, the Hai Phong City Police Department immediately directed the Criminal Police Department and Le Chan District Police to coordinate synchronously to investigate and search.

A series of videos showing M. walking with the subject on many different roads were posted. In the videos, it can be seen that M. was very obediently walking with the subject.

Even a security camera in Thuy Nguyen (Hai Phong) recorded the image of the child and the subject walking together in the railway area at around 9 pm on January 13. The subject also contacted and talked with another person and showed no unusual signs. This surprised many people because when walking with strangers on a long distance and at night, children often show signs of crying.

At that time, the authorities confirmed that the woman who took the child away from Thien Huong Kindergarten was a woman born in 1987, from Lam Dong Commune (Thuy Nguyen, Hai Phong). The leader of Thien Huong Ward People's Committee said that the parents of this person had also gone to the ward People's Committee headquarters and said that she showed signs of mental illness, and that the family was still monitoring her. However, there were several times when the girl ran away from home to go out (she liked to play with children - PV), after which the family had to search for her and bring her back.

"Due to family circumstances, the child is not picked up by a relative every day. Recently, the family's aunt often comes to pick up the child and the strange girl also looks like the child's aunt, so this could be what makes the child feel familiar and easy to go with," the leader of Thien Huong ward added about why the child did not react by crying when going with a stranger.

By the morning of January 14, Thuy Nguyen City Police identified the woman who entered the kindergarten with the child as Dong Thi Ha Thu. The case is still under investigation by the authorities.
