Vo Minh Lam (born in 1989) is the only son of a couple of Cai Luong artists from a provincial delegation in the West. Because his parents toured around the provinces, it was not convenient to take care of their children, so the boy Lam was sent to his grandmother to take care of him. Knowing how to sing early and singing very well, however, Vo Minh Lam did not dare to dream of becoming an artist.

Vo Minh Lam wanted to choose for himself a safer future, so he told himself to focus on learning culture. Mr. Liem, principal of Can Tho Art High School in 2006, who was formerly the head of the cai luong troupe where Minh Lam's father sang, advised Minh Lam to enter Can Tho Art High School.

Here, Lam learns culture like other schools, while the Cai Luong singing class takes place only two days a week. Vo Minh Lam chose to attend this school because he could learn culture without paying for tuition. The family is poor but also received a scholarship. From this school, Lam was given a favorable opportunity to develop his singing talent, and set the stage for him to enter the artistic path.

Success comes early and suffers from arrogance, not knowing above or below

Some time later, Minh Lam was allowed to participate in the national art school festival competition. As Luc Van Tien, a 16-year-old student won a gold medal, along with a certificate of merit for the best contestant in the South.

Not long after, in 2006, at the age of 17, Vo Minh Lam won the gold medal of the Golden Bell Competition organized by HTV television.

After this success, the Cai Luong show elected to invite Minh Lam to sing. In particular, the author and showrunner Hoang Song Viet is considered the first teacher to teach this young actor valuable early life lessons.

Vo Minh Lam confided: "After winning the Golden Bell Award, I was invited to sing for the Enlightenment Trust group led by Uncle Hoang Song Viet.

My uncle taught me that, at the last contest, I could only perform the singing part, to become a good artist, I need to practice more acting. If you want to perform well, you have to participate in long-running tuong singing, not in running solo shows. I absolutely follow his instructions."

Therefore, Vo Minh Lam has refused many shows with high salary, focusing on learning under the instruction of the aunts and uncles and brothers and sisters in the group. This decision gives Vo Minh Lam the opportunity to practice his craft. He focused on honing each assigned small character, and when he was assigned a big role, Minh Lam brooded over the character's psychology and tried to find a suitable way to sing.

Despite working and studying hard, Vo Minh Lam's income is not much. He said: "The first time I sang for the group, my salary was about 50,000 VND according to the price at that time.

Performances serving people in remote areas are unpaid. Meanwhile, the outside show invited me to sing a few songs, people paid a few million or even more. The show outside always coincides with the group's schedule. Therefore, I was forced to follow the schedule of the troupe.

Singing for the troupe, the salary is too little and my family is poor, so I have no money to spare. I still remember the day I went to an exchange show without a salary in Da Lat, I only had enough money to buy 2 kg of kohlrabi.

When I returned to Saigon, I didn't have a penny left in my pocket. Because of my shy personality, and not knowing much, I did not dare to borrow anyone. I fasted for more than a day. My hands and feet are weak, but until now, I still try to step on the stage to sing. After singing, I was so tired that I almost fainted.

It's been hard, but I have never regretted it, because, if I don't practice from small roles, I won't be able to perfect big roles. Money is very important, but for me, singing well, performing well and being praised by the audience is even more important."

Thanks to his eagerness to learn, Vo Minh Lam makes constant progress. The young actor was quickly entrusted with the roles of the second double, then the main double. By this time, more and more invitations from the show's voters came to Lam.

Not only stopping at the field of reformation, Vo Minh Lam was also invited to act in movies due to his beautiful appearance, 1m8 height, good acting and growing fan base.
