Tram Tu Thieng's real name is Nguyen Van Loi, he was born on October 1, 1937 (on the birth certificate in 1940) in Quang Nam. With a passion for music from a young age, when he was 10 years old, he started singing in the countryside (about the period from 1945 to 1949).

After a while, Tram Tu Thieng moved to Saigon to live and attend high school here. In 1958, he graduated from the Pedagogical School and became a teacher.

In 1966, Tram Tu Thieng joined the Psychological Warfare Department of the General Staff of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. During this time, he composed a number of songs written about soldiers such as: The Military Field Resounds, The Night of Migration, Rain on the poncho.

On Tet holiday in 1968, he wrote the song "The story of a broken bridge" when the Truong Tien bridge collapsed on the Perfume River, this song attracted a lot of attention from the audience. In 1970, after the event of a storm that devastated the South, he composed the song "Ton Nu is still sad".

Also during this time, Tram Tu Thieng joined the Vietnamese Vocal Movement, founded by musician Nguyen Duc Quang and Ban Tram Ca in South Vietnam. It is known that this is a group of cultural and artistic activities serving the community. With the motto "Using the common voice of the community to adorn the national arts and culture with a hopeful green color, bringing each person closer together to take care of building a bright homeland".

From 1970 onwards, Tram Tu Thieng worked for the program "Radio School" with other artists such as: Le Thuong, Vinh Bao, Hung Lan, Dac Dang, Xuan Hap, Tong Ngoc Hap,. ..

During this period, he composed mainly children's songs on historical, cultural and social topics to educate primary school students nationwide. This work lasted until 1975, then stopped completely.

After the incident in April 1975, Tram Tu Thieng crossed the border many times but failed, he was "re-education" for a while.

Until 1985, he was guaranteed by singer Thanh Thuy to go overseas. He settled in "Little Saigon", California, USA. In overseas, Tram Tu Thieng worked as an advisor to the executive board of the Vietnam Overseas Journalists Association for 2 terms from 1996 to 2000..

Tram Tu Thieng also continues to pursue his music career when collaborating with Cloud Center and Asia Center. Here, he and musician Truc Ho composed many songs for the chorus genre such as: Vietnamese footsteps, Vietnam nostalgia, One day in Vietnam, Thank you...

In particular, in 1987, he composed the song "Night remembering Saigon"; This song seems to talk about his life and his heart-breaking love. Poet Du T. Le once shared: "When he recalled a love affair, it was a bit tragic, and I think that because of that love, he had almost no family his whole life. for the tragic and faithful love of musician Tram Tu Thieng, which was 'Night Remembering Saigon'.

On January 25, 2000, Tram Tu Thieng took his last breath at Anaheim West Medical Center. His passing has left inconsolable regrets for his family, colleagues and many fans.

During his lifetime, musician Tram Tu Thieng once said that he mainly wrote about love and identity, stemming from his private emotional life because he had experienced so many ups and downs.

In 1970, when musician Tram Tu Thieng was 33 years old, they officially lived together, but at this time Mrs. Tan had 2 children with her previous husband. Musician Tram Tu Thieng still accepts to love his wife's stepchildren like his own children.
