Recently, a hot TikToker in the rural life segment in the countryside suddenly caused a stir in the online community when he was accused of staging to "create content".
Specifically, in a video of making lotus root dishes, this TikToker filmed the scene of digging lotus roots, but this caused netizens to raise suspicions about staging. Specifically, this TikToker has an account called LNT with more than 404k followers and more than 6.2 million likes. This guy has received the attention and love of many people through simple, honest videos about rural life in the countryside. However, the video of making lotus root dishes suddenly sparked controversy.
Accordingly, in this video, LNT had a scene of digging lotus roots. The guy dug lotus roots from the mud quite easily, just needing to bend down and gently lift them up to get big lotus roots. Meanwhile, according to many videos posted by other TikTokers, digging lotus roots is very hard work. Farmers will have to dig many layers of mud down deep, using their hands to scoop up the mud to be able to get the lotus roots. Because of this difference, netizens have raised suspicions that LNT bought lotus roots and staged the scene.
In response to the above suspicion, under LNT's video, there were many comments opposing and expressing dissatisfaction with the way this male TikToker did it. These opinions said that digging lotus roots is not that easy, so it is possible that the male TikToker bought it and did not actually dig it.
However, there are also many netizens defending this male TikToker. These opinions suggest that the area where LNT dug lotus roots may have been easy to access, or that he may have dug them in advance. In addition, there are also netizens who think that the video is just for entertainment, and should not be looked at too closely.
In fact, digging lotus roots is quite hard work. The digger needs to be skillful to ensure that the lotus roots after being dug out of the mud are still intact, not scratched or broken. This is also the typical work of farmers in Hoa Cu commune, Cao Loc district (Lang Son) who have to wade in the rain, struggle in the mud to dig up lotus roots "hiding" under the deep mud to bring them to the afternoon market on the street corner in time.
July and August are the months when people in Hoa Cu commune, Cao Loc district go digging lotus roots in the fields. The job seems simple at first glance, but to get pure white lotus roots, farmers have to sweat and tears, work hard and toil.
Mr. Kham and his wife, Ms. Nhung (Ban Lanh, Hoa Cu commune) are digging lotus roots in the rain in the field. According to Ms. Loc Thi Nhung, every year around July, the couple is busy, their hands and feet covered in mud, harvesting lotus roots. This job is hard, but because they have to make a living, they have to stick with it.
According to Mr. Kham, you have to use a homemade shovel to dig, and at the same time use a ladle to drain the water, then you can see the lotus root. Sometimes you can see the root but it takes a long time to pull it out, because if you pull it too quickly, the root will break and mud will get inside, and that part must be cut off.
Lotus will be dug selectively, the harvester will only dig up the large tubers, while the small tubers will be kept under the deep mud layer to be used as seeds for the next crop.
With more than 4 years of experience in growing and digging lotus roots, Ms. Nhung shared: This job seems simple, just a few movements of "bending down, digging and then pulling up" but not everyone can do it. Lotus root diggers must have a sharp eye to know whether the lotus root is young or old and must be gentle and skillful, otherwise it will be crushed, broken and mud will stick inside, no one will buy it.
Despite the hardship, thanks to lotus, every year, Ms. Nhung's family, Mr. Kham's family and other households in Ban Lanh village and neighboring villages have an income of 20 million VND to several tens of millions of VND from growing lotus and selling its roots.
