NewJeans on the brink of disbandment? New ruling leaves group's future uncertain

On June 23, Korean media reported that Suga , a member of the global music group BTS, donated 5 billion won (equivalent to 3.64 million USD) to support the establishment of the Min Yoongi Treatment Center, located at Severance Hospital, Seodaemun District, Seoul.
Not only is this the largest donation in the hospital's history, but it also marks a new record: Suga becomes the Kpop idol with the largest charitable financial contribution ever.
The Min Yoongi Treatment Center will focus on supporting people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), especially children, with speech, behavioral, psychological therapies and social skills enhancement programs to help them integrate into the community. The center is expected to be officially completed in September 2025.
Not only is Suga financially behind, he is also directly involved in the process of building and testing a music therapy program, an advanced therapy model called MIND (Music, Interaction, Network & Diversity). From March to June 2025, the male rapper spent all his weekends meeting with autistic children, teaching them to play musical instruments, compose, and express their emotions through music. "Music is truly a magical means of communication," Suga shared. "Being a part of this healing journey is a blessing to me."
According to Suga, he came up with the idea after meeting Professor Cheon Geun Ah (Department of Chil.d Psychiatry, Severance Hospital) in late 2024. They both realized the need for personalized treatment methods, which many autistic patients in Korea have not yet had full access to. Music, with its power to connect emotions and evoke interaction, becomes a magical bridge between the closed inner world of autistic children and the surrounding community.
Severance Hospital held a grand announcement ceremony where Suga personally presented the donation and gave an emotional speech to medical representatives and the media. However, contrary to expectations of a flawless image, this action sparked fierce controversy on social media and among the Korean public.
The reason? Suga's drunk driving incident in August 2024 is still fresh in people's memories. At that time, he was caught by the police driving an electric car while intoxicated, with an alcohol concentration of 0.227%, nearly three times higher than the license revocation level. Although he was only fined 15 million won, Suga's image was severely damaged, leading to a wave of criticism, protests, and even demands for him to be removed from BTS.
Therefore, his sudden return after quietly being discharged from the army on June 21, accompanied by a massive charity event, made many people wonder: Is this a sincere heart or a communication strategy?
"Using mone.y is the fastest way to be forgiven in Korea," wrote a comment on popular forum Nate Pann. "Don't think $3 million is too much, he will earn it back quickly when he returns to his entertainment activities."
Others were more harsh: "If he is truly repentant, he should go into hiding for a while. Doing charity work and then coming back immediately only shows that it is a calculated 'whitewash'."
However, alongside the criticism, the wave of support for Suga is also very strong. Many people believe that, whatever the motive, the result of that action is clear and noteworthy. "There has never been an idol who has donated such a large amount of mone.y and directly volunteered for 7 months," commented one fan. "Even many people who have never heard of autism are now more interested thanks to Suga. That should not be taken lightly."
Another shared: "He made a mistake, but he didn't hide it. He apologized publicly, took a break, and then came back with a kind act. It's better than many people who stay silent and let the scanda.l sink in."
Despite the ongoing controversy, it is undeniable that Suga's actions have created a positive ripple effect not only in the K-pop community, but also in the field of mental health care and autism treatment in Korea.
Suga's return with a center bearing his name, and a humane message expressed through concrete actions are gradually reshaping the image of an artist who has overcome mistakes step by step, not with words, but with actions.
