BTS's enlistment is still a topic of interest.
A senior South Korean military official believes that BTS can postpone military service because the group increases the value of the country's national brand. According to recent amendments to Korea's Military Service Act, 7 members of BTS can defer their military service.
The amendment takes effect on June 23, 2021 and allows Korean men who have been recognized for their artistic or athletic achievements to defer mandatory military service until the age of 30. In order to be deferred from military service under the new amendment, K-Pop idols must receive a certificate of cultural merit from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Normally, only artists with more than 15 years in the profession can receive a certificate of cultural merit. However, BTS was awarded the Medal of Culture in 2018, just 5 years after their debut in recognition of their efforts in spreading Korean culture and language around the world.
An article by UPI said that Jung Seok Hwan - the head of the Military Manpower Administration, shared the official position of the military with a Korean newspaper. He said the decision to give recipients of the Order of Culture the chance to defer military service was made to "minimize controversy over preferential treatment".
Jung Seok Hwan added that BTS's postponement of military service will be in the country's interest as they "enhance the value of the national brand".
Meanwhile, the BTS members have been extremely open and honest about their military service. Member Jin said, "Military service is an important duty for our country. So I feel that I will try to work as hard as I can and do as much as I can until the end. when I was called."
As a famous global group today, BTS's issues quickly attracted the attention of Korean public opinion, especially the issue of the members' mandatory military service.
Earlier, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hwang Hee answered on YTN channel regarding BTS's enlistment. "BTS has not yet submitted an application for military service. But if they do, the Government will of course agree and recommend for the group to postpone their enlistment."
In addition, it is reported that a Government task force has been established to examine whether art awards (such as BTS' popularity and record-breaking artistic achievements) can be guaranteeing the group an exemption from enlistment, similar to the awards that classical athletes and artists have competed on in global competitions.
This information has caused a lot of controversy in recent times. Many people believe that, with their achievements and influence, BTS has the right to be exempted from military service. However, many views assert that there should not be any speciality.
However, Yonhap reported, a South Korean government official confirmed that the members of BTS and other Korean pop stars will not be exempt from enlistment but only be postponed.
Earlier, the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) filed a protest against the revised military service law. This bill allows pop culture artists to defer military service.
There have been many entertainment companies opposed to the revised law because they think that BTS may be the only case benefiting from this revised law, so it is necessary to expand the scope of application. To this, Minister Hwang replied: "We will consider the fairness and equality and consider the opinion of the Ministry of National Defense."
