Lee Jung Jae expressed his admiration for director Hwang Dong Hyuk when he decided to end the "Squid Game" series, instead of continuing to expand to chase profits.
In " Squid Game 3 ", the male lead Gi Hun (played by Lee Jung Jae) had an unexpected ending. He decides to sacrifice himself to save the child who has just been born, the child of Jun Hee (Jo Yuri) and Myung Gi (Im Si Wan) - the villain who confronts him in the final game.
Gi Hun's departure received mixed reactions. A part of the audience called this a "satisfying ending". While others argue that this ending is a "bad choice" and claim that "the series has lost its appeal" .
Lee Jung Jae welcomed all the comments from the audience, saying, "Mixed reactions are inevitable for any project. Especially with "Squid Game", this is not just a project that pursues mere entertainment purposes.
Each episode has a clear message that it wants to convey. I believe it is natural for strong messages to be followed by a variety of interpretations and debates."
The 52-year-old actor said that he was surprised and admired director and screenwriter Hwang Dong Hyuk when he chose this ending for the character of Gi Hun, which also marked the end of the series.
"I was surprised when I read the script. I never imagined that the ending would be like this. I know the director has considered many versions and it is very difficult to make a choice. It's an ending that clearly shows his intention to end the series.
Often, successful series will become franchise projects and last indefinitely. There will be opportunities to work for a few more years and meet more people from all over the world. But the director chose to end the series because he prioritized the integrity of the story, rather than chasing business profits or reputation. I was amazed at his courage. The director must love his work very much," Lee Jung Jae shared.
The actor further revealed that the scene about Gi Hun's final choice was filmed for 1 day. Director Hwang attaches great importance to the ending and puts a lot of effort into this important scene.
In a recent interview with Joongang Ilbo, director Hwang revealed that Squid Game 3 used to have a much happier ending. Accordingly, the male lead Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae), player number 456, will not be sacrificed initially. He is reunited with inspector Hwang Jun Ho (Wi Ha Joon), escapes the game of life and death and leaves for the United States to see his daughter again. A perfect ending and seems logical. But then it was director Hwang who decided... crossed out.
"As I continued to write, I realized that it was getting harder and harder to live in this world," he said. "Social injustice is serious, the risk of war is lurking, the climate is changing day by day and no one is responsible. National selfishness ascends the throne, the future for the next generation is cloudy."
The key that made Hwang change his mind completely? That's when he heard that Jeff Bezos spent more than 70 billion won (about $51.7 million) just to organize a wedding. "Wealth is squeezed into the hands of a small group, and the rest play Squid Game for rice," he said bluntly.
The director born in 1971 also confirmed that there is no Squid Game 4. "It's over, Gi Hun is no longer alive. There is no reason to prolong any longer. He added that he has never been married, has no children, but is very worried about the world he will leave to the next generation. That's why he puts a child at the center of season 3, as a reminder to all of us.
From the character's sacrifice to the director's obsession with social injustice, Squid Game 3 may not be easy to watch, but there is certainly a lot to ponder.
Squid Game 3: The main male star is grumpy from start to finish, ending with "oh my god" Kim Oanh14:42:44 29/06/2025Completely different from the eagerness and despair of season 1 or the heroic spirit of season 2, Gi Hun in Squid Game 3 is tired and depressed. This is part of the reason why the film has been the subject of controversy on social networks.
