Scooter Braun has shocked the world by saying Taylor Swift fans "miscalculated" their influence in the copyright drama. The statement on the "Question Everything" podcast is sparking a new wave of outrage among Swifties.
The copyright dispute between Scooter Braun and Taylor Swift has once again flared up, with Braun claiming on the "Question Everything" podcast that fans have "misjudged" their impact on him. The shocking statement is making the "Snake Lord" fan community extremely angry, fanning the flames of criticism and creating a new wave of controversy on social media.
In 2019, Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings company "stormed" the music industry when it acquired Big Machine Label Group - the record label that owned the catalog of Taylor Swift's first six albums. This transaction meant that Scooter Braun owned the original rights to hit albums such as Fearless, Red, Speak Now and 1989. A year later, he continued to sell this catalog to Shamrock Capital for $ 300 million, causing Taylor Swift to react strongly, calling it "the worst possible scenario" in an angry post on Tumblr, and accusing Scooter Braun of "constant bullying and manipulation".
Since then, Taylor Swift has launched the ambitious "Taylor's Version" project, re-recording all six albums to regain ownership of her music. From 2021 to 2023, the singer re-released Fearless, Red, Speak Now and 1989, all of which achieved "brilliant" and record-breaking success on the Spotify platform, proving her "terrifying" influence. This year, Taylor Swift officially bought back the entire copyright of her music catalog, ending a journey of "reclaiming justice" that lasted nearly two decades, a resounding victory cheered by millions of fans around the world.
However, in a new podcast, Scooter Braun made some "shocking" statements, when he flatly denied being hurt by the backlash from Taylor Swift's fan community, also known as "Swifties". "You can't say anything right. But my response is: they are seriously mistaken to think that I care. I don't know who they are, and if I met them in real life, I would still help them if they needed it," he said with a "dismissive" attitude.
He believes the level of backlash is "overblown": "10,000 people screaming at you sounds like a lot, but it's less than 1% of a huge fanbase. Everyone has their own insecurities, like me, like every artist." Still, Scooter Braun acknowledges that Taylor Swift has achieved "tremendous" success thanks to re-releases. "She's done really well. Every time she re-releases, her original catalog grows. Business-wise, everyone involved wins. She's the greatest artist of all time," he says, arguing that the re-recording model has helped both her old and new catalogs grow, benefiting both parties.
In another podcast, "The Diary of a CEO," Scooter Braun shared more details about his relationship with Taylor Swift. He said the two only met a few times and even partied together. However, Scooter Braun's management of Kanye West and Justin Bieber - two artists who have had "unstable" relationships with Taylor Swift - took things in a completely different direction.
"When I bought Big Machine, I thought Taylor would call me and we would work together. But then the Tumblr post came out, and I was completely shocked," he said, expressing his surprise at the singer's fierce reaction. Regarding the decision to sell his copyright catalog, Scooter Braun also caused "shock" when he revealed that he had repeatedly offered Taylor Swift to buy it back, but she refused. "I can't fix a relationship I never had. I sold the catalog, walked away, and ended it," he said, affirming that he had done everything he could.
The controversy was reenacted in the documentary "Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun: Bad Blood" produced by Max, which Scooter Braun said "misrepresented many facts". In a 2022 share, he said: "I learned a big lesson. When you have a conflict with someone, if you don't talk, you can't solve anything". Despite declaring that "it's time to move on", Scooter Braun's latest statements show that the "noisy" story between him and Taylor Swift may not be completely closed, at least in the public eye.
