Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande empty-handed at AMAs: hidden crisis in the music industry?

After years of persistent struggle, Taylor Swift has officially regained ownership of all the original records (masters) of her six debut albums â the brainchildren who were sold without her right to intervene.
This is not only a special milestone in the music career of female artists but also a powerful symbol of the creative autonomy of artists in the modern music industry.
On the evening of May 30, on the official website, Taylor Swift posted a letter to fans, expressing her happiness and deep gratitude. She wrote:
"Calling this a dream come true is too modest. Thanks to your continued love and support, along with the success of The Eras Tour, I was able to buy my own music."
Before the acquisition was completed, Taylor had released four re-recordings of older albums under the Taylor's Version, including Fearless, Red (in 2021), Speak Now, and 1989 (released during The Eras Tour). The new versions are not only a re-enactment of the original music but also a bold affirmation: "My music â held by myself."
Information about the acquisition of the rights to the original recordings of six debut albums began to spread strongly in recent weeks. Although Taylor Swift has not released official figures, many industry sources have revealed impressive numbers. According to Billboard, some sources close to the singer said that the singer spent about $360 million (equivalent to more than 9,150 billion VND) to win back her music catalog. Meanwhile, Page Six quoted another source as saying that the actual price could range from $600 million to $1 billion, depending on terms related to future mining rights.
This series of records once belonged to Scooter Braun â who bought Big Machine Records in 2019 for about $300 million. This is the record label where Taylor Swift signed a record contract at the beginning of her career. Later, Taylor's music catalog was sold to investment fund Shamrock Holdings for the same price. However, during that time, the singer did not have control over the music that she herself composed and performed.
Although this deal is of great value, with total assets estimated at $1.6 billion, Taylor Swift can fully afford to do this. However, the real value of regaining ownership lies not only in the economic factor, but also in the deep spiritual meaning: she has regained ownership of the works that have accompanied the youth, career and emotions of millions of fans around the world â something she was unjustly dispossessed of.
As of now, Taylor Swift has completed the re-recording of four of the first six albums of her career. The other two albums â Reputation and Taylor Swift's debut album â were originally scheduled to be released with Taylor's Version. However, according to the latest revelation from the singer herself, continuing to recreate these two albums may no longer be necessary.
Taylor wrote with emotion:
"I can still bring those albums back if that's what interests you. But if it does, it won't come out of sadness or regret anymore â it's about celebrating."
Especially for Reputation â a product with a bold personal imprint and a rebellious attitude â the re-recording process became a big challenge. Taylor confided:
"It's an album associated with a very special period in my life. When I tried to recreate it, I constantly stumbled upon old emotions. The feeling of being misunderstood, the desire to be heard, the shame mixed with the spirit of rebellion â all of them are still too vivid. This is the only album in the first six albums that I don't believe the new version can surpass the original."
After nearly a decade of steadfast struggle to regain control of her own music, Taylor Swift has become a role model for artistic autonomy in the entertainment industry. Not only is she a successful singer-songwriter, she is also a symbol of perseverance, strategic intelligence and a strong love for music.
Her journey proves that an artist can completely stand up and reclaim what belongs to her â not with resentment, but with bravery, love and unwavering attachment from the fan community.
