Rosé ( BLACKPINK ) was embroiled in controversy before the 68th GRAMMYs when her FYC package was said to have exaggerated her achievements, causing a backlash from Kpop fans and putting the female singer's name in the "center of the storm" of discussion.
This year's GRAMMY Awards are still a few months away, but the debate over nominations has been heated from the start. Many artists have started a "For Your Consideration" (FYC) campaign to solicit votes from Recording Academy members. Among them, Rosé - a member of BLACKPINK - is becoming the center of controversy when her FYC package is said to have violated Academy regulations and "overshadowed" the achievements of other artists, especially BTS.
Each year, artists who want to be considered for a GRAMMY nomination submit their work to the voting committee. FYC promotion typically involves email, social media posts, or in-person submissions. However, the Recording Academy sets very clear rules: no GRAMMY logos, no badmouthing of competitors, no hype about achievements, no mention of live TV shows, and absolutely no gifts other than valid copies of music.
According to sources, Rosé's FYC package includes a T-shirt and documents highlighting her streaming achievements and album sales R (APT). Notably, the statement "the album has the biggest streaming debut by a Korean artist in the US" immediately received a strong response from the Kpop fan community. Billboard recorded APT reaching 31,000 SEA (equivalent to 43.85 million streams). However, BTS has recorded outstanding numbers: BE (30,000 SEA/48.56 million streams), Proof (36,000 SEA/52.84 million streams), and Map of the Soul: 7 (48,000 SEA/74.79 million streams). Thus, if we consider all Korean artists, Rosé does not hold the record.
Some have suggested that Roséâs claim may be true if we only look at solo artists. Jungkookâs GOLDEN album debuted with 29,800 SEA (41.59 million streams), slightly lower than APT. However, the wording of the FYC package has been criticized for being ambiguous, leading to misunderstandings and violating the FYC promotion guidelines.
On social network X (formerly Twitter), many viewers expressed their anger, saying that Rosé and Atlantic Records were "playing unfairly" by using promotional campaigns and sending merchandise to influence votes. Some accounts even asked the Recording Academy to remove Rosé from the nomination consideration list.
Rosé's fans, on the other hand, argued that the ad wasn't entirely wrong in terms of a solo debut, and that sending FYC gifts is industry practice. Still, the controversy shows no signs of abating, leading to discussions about GRAMMY ethics and rules.
According to the rules, âexaggerating or providing misleading information about oneâs achievementsâ can lead to disciplinary action, including disqualification. However, GRAMMY history has also recorded many cases of minor violations that have been overlooked, so it is unclear what consequences Rosé will face from the Academy.
As the 68th GRAMMY race heats up like never before, the controversy surrounding Rosé has made her name a hot topic in the media. Experts and fans are closely following her every move, predicting the nominations and discussing Roséâs chances of winning, and arguing about whether her FYC campaign will pass muster.
