Quynh Anh Shyn caused controversy when she dressed up as Ong Tho on Halloween . It would have been fine if netizens had not strongly objected, forcing her to apologize and delete the post immediately.
On the morning of October 30, Quynh Anh Shyn posted a photo set of her cosplay with Liu Grace and Sabi Rose, inspired by the character Ong Tho - a familiar image associated with Vietnamese people from the past to the present. The photo set has a Halloween color, combining creative elements and creepy images. Immediately, social networks were divided into many opposing opinions. Some people thought this was an interesting and creative idea, while many others said that dressing up a brand character in a horror style was offensive, "too much fun".
By the evening of the same day, a famous milk brand in Vietnam issued an official statement, affirming that the photo series was not a communication activity of the company. The brand emphasized: "Mr. Tho is our special image, not related to horror or Halloween content. The use of this character must be clearly licensed to ensure respect for intellectual property rights and to maintain a consistent brand image."
In response to the wave of public reaction and the move from the above brand, Quynh Anh Shyn posted an apology on her personal page. She wrote: "Shyn has received a lot of comments and shares surrounding the Halloween costume photo set. If the recent costume concept unintentionally made some viewers feel inappropriate, Shyn sincerely apologizes." She said that she and her team reviewed it and decided to remove all related images to avoid causing more misunderstandings or unnecessary debate. "Those shares help Shyn look back, learn and improve herself every day," she added.
On social media platforms, the audience's reactions are divided into many streams. Some typical comments are: "This is true again: have fun, but don't have too much fun!", "I knew it. From the moment I saw the photo series, I thought it was sick", "What's the criticism? I think it's normal", "The original is a fairy, this version is a disaster", or "If it was a baby, it would be cute, because adults dress like that, so it looks... too much".
The division in opinions shows that the line between artistic creation and respect for brand image is still a sensitive topic. Especially when the character of Ong Tho is associated with the childhood memories of many generations, the Halloween-style transformation can easily cause mixed reactions. Although he apologized and handled it quickly, this incident is a big reminder for young artists in using brand images. In the age of social networks, every action can spread strongly, leading to unwanted consequences if not carefully considered.
Quynh Anh Shyn is one of the most influential fashionistas in Vietnam, often experimenting with bold fashion concepts. However, as she herself admitted: "As an artist, Shyn needs to be more careful in the way she expresses herself so as not to make anyone feel uncomfortable."
The incident ended with an apology and the removal of the photo from Quynh Anh Shyn, but the echoes still linger. In a context where artists are increasingly expected to not only be creative but also socially responsible, this story is a typical example of "having fun, but not too much fun". Whether it was a slight slip or a big lesson, Quynh Anh Shyn chose to face it and adjust. And that is also something worth noting in the journey of maturity of a young artist in the digital age.
