Today, July 21, is the last day YouTube 's trending list will be displayed before it is "discontinued" - a feature that has been a popular measure of the popularity of entertainment products in Vietnam for over a decade.
And at that historic moment, a Gen Z artist, Phuong My Chi, left a strong impression when she became the last person to hold the top 1 position on YouTube Vietnam's music trending with the mashup performance of Tuy Am - Luc Hai Vi Vuong at the Sing! Asia 2025 stage.
As of July 21 - the last time the trending chart still existed, Phuong My Chi and artist Kha Lau's performance had maintained the top 1 position for 9 consecutive days since it was posted on YouTube. Despite being a performance at a competition, the mashup quickly went viral, attracting millions of views and shares across social networks, far beyond the scope of the program.
This is not only a beautiful and iconic moment but also a testament to the breakthrough and enduring appeal of the singer born in 2003, who is gradually rewriting the standards of a new-age female artist who is brave, individualistic and not afraid of challenges.
On the other hand, the top 1 trending achievement is not just a number but also reflects Phuong My Chi's popularity at Sing! Asia 2025. This is a music playground that gathers contestants from all over Asia, where young artists have to compete fiercely in terms of singing voice, performance thinking and cultural identity. In that context, it is not easy for a representative from Vietnam to not only attract attention but also maintain long-term heat on the digital platform.
From the mashup of Tuy Am - Luc Hai Vi Vuong to Vu Tru Co Anh, Phuong My Chi constantly changes, breaking away from the comfort zone of folk songs to integrate with the international musical language. However, no matter how innovative, the female singer still maintains the core identity that always has ethnic elements as the background, creating a distinct personality among the crowd of modern contestants.
In the history of YouTube trending in Vietnam, there have been many names that have "caused a storm" from the super "hits" with millions of views of Son Tung M-TP, Jack, Den Vau to the MVs invested in billions of VND by Hoang Thuy Linh, Hoa Minzy,...
But now, as that era comes to an end, the person holding the highest position is a Gen Z artist with a strong national identity - Phuong My Chi. That not only shows the shift in the audience's taste, but also affirms one thing, that young Vietnamese artists can absolutely make history with their own identity.
According to information posted on YouTube's blog recently, Trending was first launched in 2015, divided into four sub-categories: Now, Music, Gaming and Movies - "updating what's trending on YouTube, helping users discover the latest music videos, trailers, comedy clips and everything else people are watching right now".
However, YouTube will remove Trending and the Trending Now list, instead focusing on YouTube Charts - a specialized, personalized ranking system for each field such as music, podcasts, and trending movie trailers.
The platform will continue to add more category-specific rankings over time.
The move comes amid growing reliance on short videos, search suggestions, social media conversations, and rival platforms like TikTok, a shift that has seen traffic to Trending decline significantly, especially over the past five years.
On the other hand, some independent creators expressed frustration with the old Trending system, arguing that big brands and traditional media accounts often dominated the list, making it difficult for them to get noticed despite having high views.
In Vietnam, top trending has long been an important measure to evaluate the success and popularity of a music product (mainly popular music). Many artists take this as their main goal every time they release a new MV.
A MV reaching a high position not only brings fame but also promotes the artist's brand value. There are artists who live "well" and rise in rank thanks to their top 1 products.
