The upcoming historical thriller Gyeongseong Creature on the Netflix platform is causing a stir, when it received mixed reactions from the public, harshly disparaging on social media.
The day before its global premiere, 6 episodes of Gyeongseong Creature were revealed to the press. Instead of the expected positive reactions, the drama received over 95% negative reviews from major Korean media.
One media outlet criticized the "disorientation" of one of the most important characters, the "creature", as well as the poor chemistry between the story's protagonists, Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee. Another commented: "Watching season one doesn't make me feel curious about season two."
After its debut on Netflix, many fans of the drama who were eagerly awaiting the new series expressed similar disappointment.
Some felt that the choice of setting, Kyungseong in 1945, was "pointless", unrelated to the plot. Others expressed disappointment with actor Park Seo-joon, arguing that his acting did not fit the historical context. Some even criticized the producer for spending a huge production budget of approximately 70 billion KRW (~54 million USD) but still failing to ensure the quality of the film.
"They tried to put so much into one piece that it became a mess. For a period thriller set in that era, it's incredibly boring."
"The biggest problem is Park Seo Joon. How could an experienced actor spend so little time preparing for the role. His Japanese is so bad and he doesn't fit the context at all..."
"I thought I was watching Secretary Kim? but set in 1945"
"Is Park Seo Joon in a downhill state or something? His performance in this movie is the worst ever."
Gyeongseong Creature revolves around the story of Jang Tae Sang (Park Seo-Joon), Gyeongseong's richest man who is also a spy, and Yoon Chae-ok (Han So Hee), an expert in searching for missing people. Together, the two will fight against creatures born of human greed.
Through their investigation, they discover a horrific event taking place at Ongseong Hospital, where the Japanese military secretly conducts deadly experiments. From there they are caught up in a dangerous pursuit with Japanese soldiers and the bloodthirsty monster. Season 1 is now available on Netflix, while season 2 will air on January 5, 2024.
The Gyeongseong creature uses an epic setting to recreate the state of the country in turmoil. The lavish scenery further emphasizes the hunger and misery of the poor people.
Young men were forced to enlist to fight for the Imperial army, and women became cheap, unvalued amusements.
The film also clearly divides two factions: one side is a henchman of the Royal Family, the other is a patriotic association that wants to demand freedom and democracy.
The fact that people of the same country are willing to fight, trample on each other, become puppets for the Japanese army, brings an atmosphere of mourning and melancholy. However, what is more horrifying, inside the hospital that seems to always do good deeds, where people are treated and saved, turns out to be a captive hell, using innocent human lives as a test for cruel monsters.
The monster represents the cruel truth about war, where death can come to anyone, anytime. And in the face of death, those who seemed most trustworthy suddenly became archenemies. They do not hesitate to harm their own comrades to preserve their lives.
