In September 2012, just a year after its birth, Suja was on the shelves of Whole Foods. Today, this healthy drink brand is present in more than 10,000 stores and has an estimated annual revenue of 80 to 90 million USD.
Few people know that the female CEO of this nutritious drink business, Annie Lawless, went through a difficult time and often fell into a deep depression. Lawless realized she needed to change.
And although she has no specific plans, she still decided to leave school, where she is studying law with good grades in all subjects to follow her passion: Pure juice.
The story of the birth of Suja
Annie Lawless was born into a family with a tradition in the legal profession. So she also studied law so as not to disappoint her family. However, she chose what she loved - nutrition. Lawless didn't tell the family until there was a solid plan.
What is your underlying fear? Once you realize where your fear lies, you can begin to address it. Don't let fear dictate your thoughts and actions. Face it and find a way to get rid of it, that's when you choose your passion and love.
Having been diagnosed with Celiac disease (an intestinal condition) since childhood, Lawless is quite knowledgeable about nutrition because it is essential for her to protect her own health.
Your body is the compass. If you learn to listen to your body, it will let you know when you're off course and need new options. The more you know about your body, the more clearly you will realize which path you should take.
Instead of using conventional juicers that generate heat, Lawless learned how to juice vegetables with a cold press to keep the vitamins, minerals and enzymes intact during the juicing process, and since then she has started juicing. Experiment with juicing.
Eric Ethans, a friend of Lawless, shares her passion for fresh, pure, and organic juices. So they started bringing their innovative juices to market. They buy all their ingredients from the natural food market, then sell juices to friends at yoga classes, and deliver their own deliveries around town.
One of Lawless and Ethans' clients is James Brennan, a successful businessman. Brennan saw the potential of this deal and asked to be involved.
Initially skeptical, but when the needs of the clients exceeded the capacity of Lawless and Ethans, the two friends realized the importance of Brennan and decided to work together to take advantage of the thickness. his experience. Brennan "pulled" both the founder and CEO of NIKA Water - Jeff Church, and Suja was born.
One major problem with mass distribution of organic juice is shelf life. At first, the juice after being cold pressed was only used for 3 days, making it difficult for Suja to distribute nationwide.
But if conventional technologies are used, consumers' health can be compromised. Therefore, the company has come up with a solution associated with its mission and core values - high pressure engineering (HPP).
This technique can eliminate the possibility of bacterial contamination while maintaining all the health benefits of cold pressed juice. Suja applied HPP technology, increasing the shelf life of the product to more than 30 days, and was able to distribute the product throughout the United States.
Lawless and his co-founders sold 30% of their company to Coca-Cola for $90 million and 20% to Goldman Sachs for $60 million. The company is currently valued at $300 million. The partnership with Coca-Cola gave Suja access to lower-cost sources of supplies, a new manufacturing facility, and a much larger distribution channel.
After all the above achievements, it is worth mentioning that Lawless is not yet 30 years old. In addition to ageless intelligence, it is the philosophy of life that has brought Lawless to the success it is today.
Lessons from the 30-year-old owner
Here are a few things that you can learn from Lawless.
"Fighting" with fear
Successful at a young age, Annie Lawless has become an entrepreneurial example for many young people. Her life lessons and secrets of success have been widely shared with the public and received great attention.
The Lawless family works in the legal field. Staying in law school will be a decision so as not to disappoint the family. However, she chose what she loved - nutrition. Lawless didn't tell the family until there was a solid plan.
Listen to your body
The depression gave Lawless a clear picture of where her heart was headed - the law was not her passion, nor the path she should take. Your body is unique and stats are just the starting point to explore. The more you know about your body, the more clearly you will realize which path you should take.
Take small steps
Lao Tzu said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".
The journey to building a $300 million business took five years, while she was studying. She also took small steps in her battle with depression.
By setting goals that you can accomplish, you will build confidence. Lawless says she continues to boost her confidence by taking small steps each day.
If you're building the courage to start a business, start small. Example: Register your own domain name. Go for coffee with a knowledgeable and experienced mentor. Prototyping... Whatever the step, commit yourself to perfecting it. Then keep moving forward.
Let the universe "show the way"
Lawless does not consider coincidences as something that happens to her randomly, but sees them as gifts in life. This takes faith, courage, and perhaps a little concession to the ego.
Accept the coincidences in life, starting with making small concessions, like letting someone else choose where to eat lunch. You may stumble across a long lost friend, or business partner, as you let the universe "show the way" to you.
