Artist Thanh Tu, real name Mai Van Tu, was born in 1941 in Bac Lieu.

Thanh Tu is famous for playing the role of Nhuan Dien - Tran Minh's sincere and affectionate friend in the play Cai Luong Beside the Silk Weaving Bridge.

He fell in love with cai luong and followed singing very early, having performed in singing troupes such as Thanh Minh - Thanh Nga, Da Ly Huong, Anh Chieu Duong...; with artists such as Thanh Nga, Phuong Lien, Ngoc Giau...

He won the prestigious gold medal of the Thanh Tam Award in 1963.

Thanh Tu has a tall, bright and beautiful body with a sensitive and emotional voice, so he can play well in both social and faraway reform plays such as: Half a life of incense, Eyes of the ancients, Turning the heart, Breaking off, The heart of the sea, The smoke of the waves, Vo Tac Thien...

In addition to reforming, Thanh Tu also participates in plays and films. Before 1975, the play "Grod of Sorrow" he played with Tham Thuy Hang or The Last Mission with Tuy Hong was popular with many Saigon audiences at that time.

Artist Thanh Tu is also known as a film and television actor. The first film he participated in was Afternoon Anniversary, produced in 1969. This film is also the first film of a Vietnamese film studio created by artist Tham Thuy Hang and friends.

The film has the participation of Tham Thuy Hang and favorite famous Cai Luong artists such as Thanh Tu, Nam Chau, Kim Cuc, Ms. Bay Ngoc, Phung Ha, Viet Hung... so it attracts the audience.

After 1975, Thanh Tu acted as a police colonel in the Phoenix mission, participated in the film New Paper by director Le Dan.

But perhaps many viewers remember him the most through the role of Colonel Le Quang Trung in the film Mr. Mentor - a film about intelligence in 1996 and Brigadier General Nguyen Ngoc Lien in the 4-episode film Saigon Rangers.

The film was released in 1986, directed by Long Van, recreating the events of the Saigon Rangers operating in the enemy's heart. The film used to be one of the most popular movies of Vietnamese cinema.

When the audience was no longer interested in the Cai Luong stage, Thanh Tu and his wife returned to the Western bus station to open a pub to earn a living. However, due to the inexperience of both, the shop had to close for many months at a loss. Even the late artist had to sell his house to pay off the debt.
