As one of the prominent comedians since the late 1980s, Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc left a deep impression on the hearts of Southern audiences through a series of diverse roles, from rich to poor, from intellectuals to commoners.
Currently, at the age of U80, the male artist is still willing to return to the screen to support colleagues in urgent times and also sees this as an opportunity to meet the audience again, after many years of not acting due to health problems.
He said: "My wife has spent her whole life taking care of the family. She single-handedly raised four children to be successful, mature adults, and I just had to worry about performing. Until now, my wife and I still take care of our children even though they are all grown up, have their own families, and are successful. After taking care of our children, my wife and I take care of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and we always have to worry.
As for me, my wife always takes care of me. I had to have surgery three times, removing half of my liver, but until now I am still healthy and can still sit here. It is all thanks to my wife who is always by my side taking care of me. Until now, I am still happy that the doctor did not forbid me from eating anything, but my wife forbade me from everything, so I am not afraid of gaining weight.
My wife just wants a happy family and a decent husband. I feel that she has achieved that. I myself must always try to be a decent husband.
Whatever I can do at home, I support my wife with all my heart. My wife and I are old, I will do the hard and difficult work for my wife, it makes me very happy.
For example, now it's just the two of us at home, I take care of things like cleaning and laundry. I do what I can. I jokingly told my wife, "Now teach me how to cook and buy me a dress."
Regarding the secret to maintaining a happy marriage for more than half a century, artist Bao Quoc shared: "The secret is just my wife and I. We got married when we were very young, I was only 19 and my wife was 17. At such a young age, there are many temptations. If I am faithful to my wife but she is not faithful or vice versa, it will also end in divorce. But both sides are faithful to each other.
I am very happy to have a family like this, children love their father and mother because the parents take care of their children every little thing. Now my children grow up to be very filial to their parents. My wife educates the children properly.
Now my child is over 50 years old, when he goes out to meet my friends or my audience, he folds his hands and bows his head. That's what my wife taught him properly."
Currently, he and his wife live with their youngest daughter, who is being taken care of attentively. It is rumored that he owns about 10 mansions, a number that many people admire. In January 2024, Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc's family moved to a new villa in Palm Springs, California. According to his daughter, the villa costs 1.8 million USD (equivalent to 45 billion VND), located in a luxurious residential area with good security, with an area of 340m², three facades, including 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a gym, a modern kitchen and many high-end amenities.
In terms of his career, with his "acting as if not acting" acting style, a mix of subtle satire and deep laughter, he has captivated and made many generations of audiences unforgettable. At one point, the name Bao Quoc was a "revenue guarantee" for the theater stage, a symbol of Southern comedy with respectful titles such as "king of comedy" or "first comedian".
Meritorious Artist Bao Quoc, real name Lu Bao Quoc, was born in 1949 in Tay Ninh, the sixth child in a famous artistic family. His father is cai luong artist Lu Hoa Nghia (Mr. Nam Nghia), his mother is the owner of the famous Thanh Minh cai luong troupe in the 1950s-1970s. He is the younger brother of the late artist Thanh Nga - a monument of Vietnamese cai luong. His family also has many familiar faces such as Chi Tien, Huu Loc, Huu Chau, Hong Loan, Gia Bao, Cindy Lu...
His family said that as a child, he could not sit still, often causing trouble, even to the point of breaking props before performances. Although his father sent him to school with his older sister, the late artist Thanh Nga, little Bao Quoc was always busy playing and often skipped school.
Starting with cải lương, but his time with this genre was not long. When cải lương in Saigon fell into decline, he listened to his sister's advice and switched to comedy, a bold and fateful decision.
From a reformed opera artist who tried his hand at comedy, he quickly became famous for his natural charm and rare ability to make people laugh, and was called "the young shoot of the comedy village". A series of classic plays associated with his name such as Con ma nha ho hu, Muon chong, Bet do, Di dem co ngay gem ma... are still remembered by audiences today.
He said: "I am so passionate about the stage. The most important thing that has kept me attached to the stage for the past decades is being close to the audience. Today's young audience prefers to watch younger artists, and will not choose to come to the stage to see me perform.
I think I'm grown up now, so I should leave the stage to my younger siblings. I only perform when there are artists of my generation, because I know that the audience who come to the stage at that time are also the audience of the past, the audience of my time.
For example, I often perform for Gia Bao's shows, to perform with Minh Vuong, Le Thuy... who are my colleagues. I love it. There were audiences who came in wheelchairs to watch me perform at my live show at Hung Dao theater, I was so touched. After I finished performing, I went out of the theater door and saw a friend pushing a girl in a wheelchair to the elevator. That means they and their children had to come to the theater to see me perform by all means. I knelt down before her, just holding her hand and burst into tears. I knelt down to thank her."
