The Lionesses are a K-Pop group whose four members are openly gay, they were also the first openly LGBTQ idol group of K-Pop in the music industry.
They both met and became friends after visiting gay venues in Korea. Incidentally, all four share a passion for music, which is when they decided to form a group in hopes of releasing songs that would resonate in the gay community.
Talking about the group name Lionesses, the members claimed the idea came from the image of lionesses in the wild. "People believe that the male lion is the ruler of the forest. In fact, the real rulers are the lionesses. They are always in charge of hunting for their group," Damjun said.
The Lionesses' songs often carry LGBTQ-related themes, including life, coming out, facing prejudice and social stigma. This particular boy band wants to inspire gay youth to follow their dreams and break down barriers.
It can be said that this is a very strong and somewhat bold step of Lionesses when daring to live authentically in the middle of a society full of discrimination in the land of kimchi.
Since 2003, homosexuality has no longer been labeled as obscene and harmful in South Korea, but discrimination against the community has not abated over time. The government's policy is non-discrimination and urges people to accept gender diversity, but in fact, the LGBT community in the country of kimchi insists they do not receive certain protection and respect in their daily lives.
In South Korea, homosexuals are called secondary populations. Therefore, people here who were conservative now dare not express themselves, so they hide their true gender to keep social and work relationships. In 2017, a survey by South Korea's National Human Rights Commission found that up to 92.6 percent of homosexuals said they felt afraid of being hated by society. Another Gallup survey found that 58 percent of South Koreans opposed same-sex marriage, 34 percent supported it and 8 percent abstained.
This metric reflects South Koreans' view of the LGBT community but is at the same time somewhat reasonable. Since the birth rate here is falling to the lowest level among developed countries, people's opposition to same-sex marriage is completely valid. However, this is only a very small reason compared to other factors such as social pressure that make Koreans not interested in getting married, even not wanting to date, let alone having children. The LGBT community is just living their true gender and there is no reason for them to take responsibility for improving the country's birth rate.
South Korean men are required to undergo 18 months of military service. This causes obstacles for all transgender people.
Although South Korean law currently supports transgender people from military service, they still receive unfair treatment from society.
Korea is a country that values appearance and is famous for its developed aesthetic level. They are very open in correcting facial contours, but beauty centers do very little to perform gender reassignment procedures. This is the comment of Mr. Joy Kang, CEO of Eunogo medical travel guide service.
