The story of the most skillful jealous.y letter in Vietnamese history by Queen Nam Phuong has become a special anecdote. However, besides this love triangle story, many people still wonder what will happen to Ly Le Ha after that 66-word letter.
In the 1930s, Ly Le Ha was already a legend in the "prostitutio.n world" with her captivating beauty. Her beauty lay not only in her attractive body but also in her "white jade" smile that could captivate any man. In 1936, she set foot in Hanoi, continued to work as a dancer at a famous dance hall, and quickly became the center of attention of the upper class, pursued by countless men.
At that moment, fate pushed her into the sights of King Bao Dai - the romantic and liberal former Emperor. From then on, Bao Dai openly dated Ly Le Ha, partying every night, ignoring the annoyance of his first wife Nam Phuong Hoang Hau and "Secondary Concubine" Mong Diep. For Ly Le Ha, those were probably the most brilliant days, when she was with the most powerful man in the country, being pampered, being covered with the halo that she had long dreamed of. She thought that she had finally found a place to rest, escaping the darkness of a life of "selling se.x", to enter a romantic, true love affair.
Ly Le Ha's happiness did not last long. When Bao Dai left Vietnam for Shanghai and then Hong Kong, Ly Le Ha did not mind the hardships, traveling overland to follow her lover, serving him wholeheartedly. She thought that her loyalty and devotion would earn her a worthy place in the heart of the former Emperor.
However, what she received was a cold "ultimatum", which later went down in history as the "66-word jealous.y letter" from Queen Nam Phuong. The letter was passed down with the content: "Dear sister Ly Le Ha. I am thousands of miles away from the former Emperor, but I know that you are wholeheartedly taking care of the former Emperor in Hong Kong. I pra.y that history will not abandon the former Emperor in the future, and that we will meet again. The Empress Dowager Tu Cung and I will be grateful to you for the rest of our lives. Sister Nam Phuong!".
Although the words sounded polite, hidden in each sentence was a stern warning, pushing Ly Le Ha into the position of a third person with no way out. That letter was not only a bucket of cold water poured on her passionate love but also a bitter reminder of her nameless status, forever standing on the sidelines of the former Emperor's life. That was the moment she realized that no matter how much she sacrificed, she could not be the only one in Bao Dai's passionate heart.
Despite receiving a "warning" from Queen Nam Phuong, Ly Le Ha still faithfully served and believed in the empty promises of the man she was infatuated with. She hoped that her perseverance and sincere love would be rewarded with an official title and a stable position next to Bao Dai.
However, life was harsher than she thought. Later, when King Bao Dai continuously took more concubines, and then Mong Diep and Queen Nam Phuong came to Hong Kong, Ly Le Ha was gradually pushed out of the former King's room. Her presence became redundant, no longer cared for. From then on, people did not see the figure of that charming dancer for 3 years, perhaps the time when she was immersed in pai.n and despai.r.
When she returned home, Ly Le Ha's tragedy did not end. Although the man she had pursued continuously bestowed titles on many different women, granting them titles, Ly Le Ha - who had sacrificed her youth and reputation - was abandoned, without receiving any recognition or title.
Ly Le Ha's life is a heartbreaking testament to the fate of a woman who fell in love with a man who did not belong to her. She thought she could escape the "quagmire" of the past, find happiness and status with the former Emperor, but in the end she fell into a life of eternal damnation.
She was forever doomed to be the third wheel, ridiculed by the world, and had to live her entire life with the pai.n of not being able to wait for a title, nor for a word of fidelity from the man who had promised the world. The tragedy of the dancer Ly Le Ha is a bitter reminder of the fragility of happiness, especially when it is be.t on the promise of a passionate heart.
