The official website of the Guinness World Records Organization has posted attention-grabbing information: Mr. Luu Cong Huyen, 67 years old, from Giao Thuy, Ninh Binh, is officially recognized as the person with the longest nails in the world with a total length of up to 594.45 cm.
According to Guinness, in mid-February 2025, Mr. Craig Glenday â Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records â went directly to Giao Thuy to measure Mr. Huyen's nails. This process is done very meticulously: experts use a soft rope to thread each bend of the nail, mark the length and compare it with a tape measure. The final result is calculated based on an average of two measurements to ensure absolute accuracy.
The results showed that Mr. Huyen's left fingernail had a total length of 388.85 cm, and the right hand was 205.6 cm. In particular, the thumb nail of the left hand reached an impressive length of 127.5 cm. With this number, Mr. Luu Cong Huyen officially became the holder of the Guinness record for "The longest nails on two (male) hands". Mr. Huyen shared in emotion: "I am extremely happy to be recognized as a Guinness record. This is the result of a persistent journey over the past 40 years."
Mr. Luu Cong Huyen is a freelance painter. His decision to grow long nails stemmed from his father's desire to follow the profession of shaman. Although he did not continue that work later, he still kept the habit of wearing nails, and gradually considered it as a part of his life.
"When I think about cutting my nails, I'm nauseous, physically and mentally tired," he confessed. Therefore, during the past decades, he has never cut his nails, only carefully cared for and preserved them. When the nail broke, Mr. Huyen stored each piece in a glass cabinet located in the living room.
To maintain this "giant" nail, he had to change his entire living habits. Nails must be kept dry, avoiding moisture because they are easy to soften and fall out. In crowded places, a slight collision can also cause damage, so he is always careful to shield himself. When sleeping, he had to lie on his side, adjusting each position to avoid breaking his nails. Changing clothes, especially inserting your hands into the sleeves, is almost impossible to do by yourself, but you have to ask your wife â Ms. Thi Thuan â for help. Despite the inconvenience, Mr. Huyen still maintains some normal activities such as riding a motorbike, painting â his favorite job and also his main occupation.
Mr. Craig Glenday, a representative of Guinness, said: "Since the death of Mr. Melvin Boothe (American), this record has not had a successor. The recognition of Mr. Luu Cong Huyen not only supplements the missing item but also is a tribute to his special energy and perseverance."
In Guinness history, the first person to be recorded for long nails was a Chinese monk (in 1960). Later, Mr. Melvin Boothe once held the title of "The longest nail set on two (male) hands". Meanwhile, the record of "The longest nails on two hands (women)" and also the longest of all time currently belongs to Ms. Diana Armstrong (USA) with a total length of 1,306.58 cm.
The world's longest nails make Mr. Huyen famous, but at the same time it also brings countless inconveniences. He was almost dependent on his wife for most of his daily activities. Traveling, labor, or even small things such as buttoning shirts and opening bottle caps all become challenges.
However, Mr. Huyen has never thought of cutting them. For him, the nails have become an inseparable part, associated with memories, beliefs and even consistency in life.
Looking back on the 40 years of not cutting his nails, Mr. Huyen shared: "I have accepted these difficulties for a long time. Instead of seeing them as obstacles, I see them as a difference and am proud of it."
