While the whole country is looking forward to the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, the film Nga Ba Dong Loc is mentioned as a classic work, deeply depicting the image of 10 female youth volunteers who have become legends.
This is not just a war movie, but a story that makes anyone who watches it tear up, both sympathetic and proud of the sacrifice of the "immortal beauties".
Dong Loc Crossroads is a 1997 Vietnamese film directed by Luu Trong Ninh and written by Nguyen Quang Vinh, produced by Vietnam Feature Film Studio. The film tells the true story of 10 female youth volunteers, aged only 17 to 22, belonging to Squad 4, Company 552, Youth Volunteer Corps.
They were tasked with keeping the vital route of the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Dong Loc Junction - known as the "deat.h coordinate" because it was subjected to thousands of bombs by the US Air Force - open. In a bombing on July 24, 1968, all 10 of them died, leaving behind an inconsolable pai.n for the nation.
The film was based on the poem Ha oi, originally titled the script Vang trang trinh nu. To ensure authenticity, the film crew went to Dong Loc T-junction in 1996, meeting with witnesses, including Mr. Linh - a local squad leader.
Thanks to real stories, the script was edited to more accurately recreate the sacrifices of the female youth volunteers, not only the working moments but also the emotional moments of everyday life.
Each scene is a knife gently touching the viewer's heart. From the sound of bombs falling to the sky to the resilient eyes of the girls, everything makes the audience relive the fierce days on the battlefield in the past. The film not only depicts the cruelt.y of war, but also highlights the youthful dreams, unfinished love and noble ideals of the girls, making the viewer feel both sorry and admiring.
Released in 1997, Dong Loc Crossroads quickly won over audiences and experts, winning a series of prestigious awards. The excellent film received the Golden Lotus Awar.d at the 12th Vietnam Film Festival in 1999 and the A Prize from the Vietnam Cinema Association in 1997.
On the international stage, the film was honored with the Korean Peace Committee Awar.d at the Non-Aligned Countries International Film Festival in Pyongyang in 1998. In 2013, the film continued to shine when it was screened at the 11th Imagineindia International Film Festival in Madrid, Spain, receiving much praise.
Among the talented cast such as Thuy Huong, Ngoc Dung, Van Anh, Hong Tham... the role of People's Artist Xuan Bac is truly a highlight. In the film, he transforms into the character Thang, a young and enthusiastic soldier, carrying both courage and youthful emotions.
When he played Dong Loc Crossroads, People's Artist Xuan Bac was still a young actor, just "taking his first steps" in the profession, with a "naive" but extremely natural acting style. His role as Thang was like a breath of fresh air, both rustic and genuine, making the audience clearly feel the image of a generation of young people ready to sacrifice for the Fatherland.
Although a supporting role, this character contributed to deepening the story, especially when combined with the tragic setting of Dong Loc T-junction. This role is not only an important milestone in the career of People's Artist Xuan Bac but also makes viewers remember it forever.
More than just a film, Dong Loc T-junction is a profound tribute to the female youth volunteers who sacrificed their lives for national independence. The image of the 10 girls has become a symbol of patriotism and the indomitable spirit of Vietnamese women.
