Premiering at the end of June, the Vietnamese film The Most Beautiful Summer left theaters on July 26. On movie screening websites, audiences can no longer book tickets. Director Vu Khac Tuan's film earned more than 4 billion VND after nearly a month in theaters.
According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam (independent box office monitoring unit). Right from the opening days, the film's sales were gloomy, receiving 2.4 billion VND after 7 days of screening, inferior to many works from Hollywood, even worse than the Vietnamese film released in April, L. Flip. Side 7: A wish of Ly Hai.
Last weekend, the movie only earned 17.4 million VND, with 339 tickets sold and 23 screenings, ranking last in the list of movies currently playing in theaters.
During the process of being broadcast on the big screen, the film failed to create an impact, with few discussions despite gathering many People's Artists and Meritorious Artists.
The cast of The Most Beautiful Summer brings together many great artists such as People's Artist Viet Anh, Meritorious Artist Cong Ninh, Meritorious Artist Hong Anh to beautiful young faces such as Khanh Van, Tran Nghia, Cong Duong, Minh Du. Director Vu Khac Tuan used to be Film editor for many hundreds of billion projects such as May Brilliant (2018), Godfather (2021), Mrs. Nu's House (2023), Mai (2024).
Poor sales caused the work to continue the series of failed Vietnamese films. Many works had previous losses such as Fragile Flower, Lady Heir 2, B4S: Before "Love", Murder on the 4th Floor and most recently Claws.
That summer followed a familiar motif, the school youth genre, intertwining the past and present. The film's script was commented on by the audience as fragmentary and full of old details.
The acting of a cast of veteran artists is a plus point, bringing naturalness and lightness. Tran Nghia's ability to grasp psychology was also praised, along with Minh Du's laughter-inducing performances. Khanh Van's transformation still has many limitations, while Cong Duong and Nguyen Tu are somewhat lackluster compared to their colleagues.
When it was first released, the movie's teaser attracted attention because of its nostalgic content. The teaser opens with a train ride back in time with the question "What scene will the movie about you start with?", helping viewers open up memories of the past. After that, the audience will join the characters on the memory train, returning to the innocent and enthusiastic years of a group of students including 4 boys and 1 girl in their twenties.
Throughout this journey, the intense memories of youth about friendship, love, first feelings and even regrets when growing up are fully and honestly recreated. Besides the familiar images of schools and dormitories, audiences will also be immersed in the poetic scenery of the Central Highlands mountains and forests such as hundreds of year old pine trees and sunny roads.
Obviously, the failure of the above films is not difficult to explain. In the opinion of filmmakers, one of the reasons why projects fail at the Vietnamese box office is that the filmmakers went the wrong way by exploiting outdated topics, unattractive scripts, and unattractive dialogue. , illogical plot, immature and unsynchronized acting of the young cast, ineffective communication... Because, if the film is invested in properly capturing the audience's tastes, it will quickly overcome barriers. restrictions on show times and screening times.
Besides, there is the factor of launch time. It can be easily seen that the movies that "make big news" are mostly released on long holidays. In theory, yes, but clearly there is still no specific "answer" to solve the difficult problem for Vietnamese cinema. While audiences still expect truly quality domestic films that can compete fairly with foreign films.
Despite failure, many manufacturers still work hard on their passionate projects. Instead of being "inactive" and waiting for the festival season to release movies, at the end of August, some works such as: Ma Da, Getting Rich with Ghosts are still planning to premiere. Accordingly, both of these works belong to the horror genre, a film genre that is showing signs of improvement in recent years.
In fact, the Vietnamese film market is still small and unstable, which causes the gap between popular films and flop films to gradually increase. Along with that, audiences are also increasingly demanding about the quality of their work. This is a "difficult problem" for filmmakers, forcing them to find a solution in "closing" worthy, quality projects. to implement and convince the public, instead of choosing the "golden time" and waiting for a lucky opportunity.
